I noticed the one area the Colts have out-spent other teams is in the special teams area - does that mean we have the best special teams in the league - no it means we have two of the highest paid special teams player - McAfee and Vinateri. I am huge fans of both of these players but I will add both are free agents this year and I am not sure we can afford to invest additional cash to keep them. I would say unless the players are willing to come to accept a team friendly contract that the team needs to bring in players that will cost less. Another idea would be keep McAfee and use him for punting and kicking. I really don't have any idea how practical that is but I remember that McAfee was a highly regarded place-kicker in college and he talks about being used for long field goals.
This is one of the practical questions that doesn't have a good answer. Could the Colts replace one or both of these players and go on next year and contend for a super bowl? I think so. Could we come up a field goal short at some point and then would we say we should have kept them - again the answer is yes. Could we find better players for less money - depending upon your definition of better- the answer is yes. It will come down to what Grigson and Pagano think is best for the team - invest more in special teams for a proven commodity or roll the dice and see what we find.
If it was easy we would al be general managers.
