Some of the positions of need for the Colts that we are looking at are because the Colts just weren't that good at the position last year and need help. Others are because the Colts have pending free agents at the position which would create a big need if those free agents left.
The cornerback position is one of those. Unquestionably the best player at the position for the Colts, Vontae Davis, is set to become a free agent on March 11, as is Cassius Vaughn. Josh Gordy is a restricted free agent. While if Vaughn and Gordy leave the Colts will need some more depth at the position, the real question is whether the Colts will re-sign Davis.
Davis has elite caliber but has been inconsistent. Last year he showed how good he can be at times but also showed that inconsistency I mentioned. There are differing opinions on whether the Colts should re-sign him or not, but I think they absolutely should. He is a number one cornerback who fits Chuck Pagano's defensive system and is a very good man coverage corner. He would be very hard to replace this offseason, and if he leaves then corner becomes a major need.
Besides the fact that Davis's departure would create a big hole in the lineup, it also would put Greg Toler in a bigger spot, which isn't a smart idea for the Colts. Toler was signed last offseason as a free agent but wasn't good in 2013, as he didn't play great and missed a large part of the season with an injury. Plenty of fans will point out the fact that with cutting Toler the Colts can save over $4 million in cap space, which makes the move seem like a no-brainer. While I think it does seem logical to release Toler, I really, really doubt it happens. That would mean that the Colts would have to sign two starting corners this offseason and that they gave up on Toler after just one year. I didn't think Toler was good in 2013, either, but I don't think he'll be cut.
I think the Colts absolutely need to re-sign Vontae Davis. I think that should be priority number one for them right now. If they don't, then cornerback becomes a huge, huge need.
