Colts Re-Sign S and ST Ace Sergio Brown

The Colts announced they have re-signed safety and special teams ace Sergio Brown.

The Indianapolis Colts have announced that they have re-signed safety and special teams ace Sergio Brown.  This is a great move for the Colts, as Brown was one of the league's best special teams players last season.

The Colts have lost safety Antoine Bethea in free agency to the San Francisco 49ers, so that makes signing a safety a bit more relevant, but this move is mainly for special teams reasons.  Earlier today I wrote about how the team had brought back the core of their special teams unit in Adam Vinatieri and Pat McAfee along with having Matt Overton still under contract, but Brown was the next piece that was needed.  Now, the Colts have signed him.

Statistically, Brown played in 14 games in 2013 and recorded 9 special teams tackles, plus he recovered a fumble and blocked a field goal.  He was a major, major part of Pat McAfee's franchise record 27 punts downed inside the 20 yard line.  For his career, he has played in 56 games, making 42 tackles, 31 special teams tackles, 2 passes defended, 1 interception, and 1 fumble recovery.

While this move also brings added depth at safety and to a secondary that really needs it, the move was made primarily because of Brown's tremendous special teams ability.  That is hard to measure but it truly is there, and this also shows that the Colts are serious about having good special teams - as they have now re-signed kicker Adam Vinatieri, punter Pat McAfee, and special teams ace Sergio Brown.  It sends a good message and this was a great move for the Colts.
