So I found this on Twitter. It's a breakdown of Vontae will be paid each year. 6.25 this year, 11.25 next year, 8.25 in 2016, and 10.25 for 2017. I think there are two big things to take away from these numbers:
1. Vontae's hit for this year is 6.25 million, which as far as I'm aware is lower than everyone has been anticipating when calculating the Colts' remaining cap space. This means Grigson has a few more million dollars to toss around; if I'm right, about 3.5 more than we thought. That extra cash would go a long way towards snatching up Hakeem Nicks without affecting the number we have been working with. To me, this is another sign Grigson is really planning to take a swing at getting Alex Mack and wanted the extra space this year to work with. This might be the eternal optimist in me speaking, but too many little things are lining up in my mind for there not to be at least an attempt to signing Mack. Guess we'll see as the week moves on.
2. The roster bonus due next year. The way I read Over the Cap's explanation, Vontae is guaranteed to be paid 5 million of that no matter what happens. However, the other million and his salary for next season only become guaranteed if he is still on the roster for the fifth day of the next league year. Will most likely amount to nothing, but that should Vontae completely bomb this year then Grigson can get out of the contract and save some money. And after 2015 Vontae could also be cut for significant savings should he not be living up to his contract. Basically, Vontae's contract is similar to what we've seen with a lot of Grigsy's signings: a lot of money up front, but the Colts can get out of the deal with minimal long term effects if they need to.
Anyway, I found these numbers interesting and felt like sharing. Feel free to call me a moron/conspiracy theorist.
