So I'm sitting here thinking about how this contract could get done in order to make something work for us. I really dont want to see Andrew taking snaos from Phil Costa. Spotrac.com has us at 16 mil for cap space right now. I have no idea if thats up to date, but it sounds about right. It also has Cleveland sitting at 40 mil, which sounds really high.
Cleveland has a lot of holes to fill, namely quarterback. I can see them easily packaging their 2 1st round picks to move up and select a QB that they think will be the future, but he wont be because its Cleveland, but I digress. Picking a QB high in the draft is going to cost them roughly 4-5 mil against their capthis year, plus the rest of their rookie signings, plus other free agents they will acquire as the offseason moves on.
Why couldnt we offer Mack a front loaded 4 year deal worth roughly 39 mil.
2014: 12-13 mil
2015: 10-11 mil
2016: 8 mil
2017: 7 mil
The key is that his cap hit in 2016 needs to be low because we will have Andrew and TY that will command a good amouny of our cap. The next highest paid center is Scott Wells and hes making 5.5 mil this year. This makes Alex Mack the highest paid center in the NFL, which would make him happy, but more importantly gets us the best young center in the NFL to work with the best young QB.
I dont think Cleveland will match this, or they would have already offered him the big money. If they do match it, then too bad, we find another option, whether that be Goodwin or Holmes.
I would like to see us drop Toler, which would free up some cap space, but keep RJF for depth. I would rather us use our 2nd round pick on a Safety, and maybe a 4th on a CB, and rill with those two starting, rather than seeing the oft injured Toler play 3-4 meaningful games and eat up the cap that he is.
