Corner Backs are/will be the big winners in Free Agency this year.
Demand exceeds supply in a league where five and six defensive back formations are the rule more than the exception. Teams need four competent CBs for two main reasons.
- To guard against injury
- NFL offenses and the modern NFL trend towards the passing game have created more offenses that can expose a team's weakest link in a defensive backfield. More than ever a defense is only as strong as its weakest link.
The situation is somewhat analagous to a starting rotation in baseball. If you get a top rate #1 CB your #2's job gets easier...and on down the line. Darius Butler looks a whole better as a #3.
This trend will spill over to the NFL draft for functional and financial reasons. At #59 we could see up to 10 DBs off the board by the time we pick.
