I could almost hear Brad screaming in his mom's basement the moment the Colt's selected Jack Mewhort in the second round. What!? Someone many had not heard of, who hadn't been pushed up by the media over the past 3 months!? Where is our big name, when there were still guys like Nix, Jackson, and Martin available!? If Grigson keeps making picks like this, we will be looking for a new job in a matter of months...
Well, folks, I have some news - Mewhort is a hell of a player and person. He was routinely called out as a team leader by coach Meyer, and a 3rd team all american this past season. He is durable, heady, and was well liked by teammates. But his biggest value? Versatility - he can play all 5 positions across the o-line, and play them well.
There may have not been a more versatile lineman in the draft, and this is important for a couple of reasons.
- We have immediate need in the interior of our offensive line, for both starting quality and depth. His versatility allows insurance whether Thorton or Holmes struggle, without necessarily giving up on either of them, as he can be a movable chess piece and utilized elsewhere down the road (see below).
- Cherilous is about to get VERY expensive, and Mewhort may very well be able to slide into RT down the road
p.s. - I absolutely love the Moncreif pick as well
