I write this surely due to the boredom that is the pre training camp blues. Even with the latest great addition of ColtsCamp.com to my daily Colts reading routine I still find myself wanting more. I am fully aware this will not happen but a man can dream can't he?
So I'm listening to the radio today and boom! Jmoore sports starts talking about Andre Johnson. Andre wants out and the Texans apparently are now looking for a deal. The Texans realize camp is upon them and they are still unsure about their 10 mil a year stud wideout. With no good option at Qb for the worst team of last season things still look bleak. That alone will surely guarantee another top 10 pick next year. It's a simple case of right player wrong time for Andre and the Texans. The situation kind of reminds me of our situation with the GOAT (imo) Peyton Manning.
So I start thinking why not the Colts? First issue I thought about was salary cap space. Second issue I thought of is whether or not the Texans would even consider trading with in the division. My guess is most likely a resounding HELL NO. Then I pondered our WR depth and realized we most certainly don't NEED to upgrade. Then I started thinking of the positives. First and foremost Andre Johnson is a Stud. I don't care what statistic someone could show me of a decline in his play. I watch the guy a lot and he makes me so nervous on every passing down. Second he wants rings. I want rings too. Andrew Luck a co. Would agree as well.
Then it hit me. What if we could pull off the inevitable and land Andre. What would it cost? Well in order to gain cap space the Colts would have to send some players back in the deal. So what about Hakeem Nicks and Matt Hasslebeck plus a 5-7 round pick. Surely that would be enough. Hasslebeck could work with the young guys in Houston. By my math the cap would work out close to a wash in what we send and what we take back. Although I seriously belive Andre would consider a Contender discount. Say 3 years 18 mil. That gives him the same money on his deal now but over 3 years rather than 2 which I believe is what's left on his current deal. I think this deal would make bueatiful sense for both teams involved. The Texans get a valuable mentor, a younger still capable Nicks, and a draft pick. The Colts would have a serious 3 year SB window. The Texans won't likely compete til after then anyways so why do they care if Andre gets a ring with the Colts.
If you read this blog Mr Irsay or Mr Grigson please make the call and just explore the possibility if you can. Maybe you already have. If so good job guys. Anyways enough dreaming for the evening. I fear NBA free agency is beginning to drive me wild on lack of comparable football news. Who knows maybe we will get LeBron as a TE too. Ok seriously enough is enough. Thanks for the read.
