High Expectations Regarding This Years Defense?

Hey all, it's been a while since I've written anything on here. I used to be an avid participant in writing, and adding my fair share of perspective to this site. I read from this site everyday still, and hope to continue to contribute a little bit more.

Anyhow, it's preseason and although we have an 0-2 record, I think you should really look past the win/loss and concentrate on the good from both games.

Now, before I start to make any sort of points at all, it is preseason. I'm pretty sure the Detroit Lions were undefeated, preseason champs, and went 0-16 in the regular season. I also might add that we haven't played the best offensive teams in the league to say the least.

Both of the New York teams came away with a victory, but there is a positive to the games. We can gush and rave over the offense all day long, because quite frankly it's loaded. Even if the Colts fail to add any offensive help, the offense will still get better simply because of Andrew Luck. He's that type of guy. He's of the Peyton Manning mold. He is in year three and the man is nuts. Not to mention, we have great young tight ends, we are stacked at wide receiver, and quite frankly I think the offense is truly built to throw it up and down the field. Now we have flaws to, ala running backish, interior oline, etc etc. But hey, all teams have flaws, so I think we can be pretty happy with where our offense stands.

The defense however, is very intriguing.

Not only do I believe that we have the talent on defense, but I believe (baring injury) we have the chemistry on defense to be a sound unit.

I think our front seven is probably the best it has been in a little while. Just the three down linemen are nasty dudes. Jones, Chapman, and Redding can all make running the ball hell, as they are tough, space eating guys. The depth and rotation behind them is decently impressive as well.

Gosh, I really wish Mathis WASN'T suspended for the first four games, and specifically the first game alone. Going to Denver will be tough, but with Mathis sitting out, we lose our best defensive player and a guy that changes the game. We saw him change the game last year when he wrecked Peyton. But Mathis, Walden, Werner (very excited about), Freeman, Jackson, and depth all over the place in the linebacking corps, I am very excited of the things they can do. Very underrated things we don't talk about on here is just how much of a leader DQ Jackson is. The guy absolutely has a presence, and if he isn't leading by how he plays on the field, he's making sure everybody is definitely lining up correctly.

Secondary is something I'm decently satisfied with, but satisfied is ALL I am. Barring any injuries I think the squad can be a solid unit. What are the odds everybody stays healthy? That I do not know, but I can be optimistic, so for now I will be. I personally think Vontae Davis, Greg Toler, and Darius Butler is a good 1 2 3. I think they have the skills to get the job done in a system that we run. Gordy for depth is nice, but I'll definitely say I wouldn't mind another premier corner on this team.

Safety is kinda scary. Landry hasn't lived up to the hype as of yet. I've definitely seen him make some plays, but when it comes to being an all around great safety, that I feel most of the great defenses have... we don't have one. Physically gifted yes, but staying healthy and being on the field might be more important. Not to mention the other safety spot is dicey. Any injuries could be devastating in this area, but if we all have a healthy season, we might see one of the better defensive units we've had here in Indianapolis.

I truly do believe that if anybody can coach up a secondary, it is our head coach. Criticize him all you want, the man knows what he's doing with a secondary..

Fun fact is the Colts currently rank 5th in yards given up during their preseason games, and quite frankly we destroyed the Giants last night. We looked so good early it was insane, if you judge the game based on the score you are already fooling your brain. It's funny too that you actually have to watch the game to see what really happens, as penalties negate some of the best plays. Eli Manning for example should have been 1-7, for 6 yards, and a pick!!

But honestly, lets all take a step back and realize.. it is just preseason and only what matters matters, if you know what I mean?

Just some die hard optimism, personal outlook, and time on my hands to write this.

Hope you all enjoy
