Colts Look Good, Fans Still Need To Be Patient With Richardson

If last night's game was any indication of what the Colts will look like this season, we are in for quite a ride. The Horse Shoes were solid on both sides of the ball for three quarters, but the telling tale was the dominance of the starters. As I stated in my previous blog, I believe the monster has arrived. "Sinistar" is up and operational. The Colts will be able to do 3 things this year that they couldn't do last year: Run the ball, stop the run, and pressure the QB consistently. But as we approach the new season fans are still cracking jokes about Trent Richardson being a "bust" and cat calling for "Boom" Herron.

Last year most Colts fans had the unrealistic belief that Richardson would come in here the moment he got off the plane and instantly transform an abysmal Colts running attack into a top 5 rushing powerhouse. Nevermind that they never considered the fact that he didn't have an off-season to learn Pep Hamilton's intricate system. Oh and BTW, the Colts offensive line was an absolute joke last season as well.

I've made it no secret that I believe Richardson will shine as soon as he gets comfortable with the terminology as well as a few upgrades on the offensive line. Now that most of that has been done, I still believe that the best is yet to come with him. All of Trent's detractors criticize him without looking at important factors that have attributed to the lack of success he's had thus far in Indy. They even overlook the fact that every good RB in today's league has a front line that can move the pile. The only RB that I can recall who was able to run regardless of his was Barry Sanders. He only happens to be the greatest of alltime. Last night's game against the Giants may not have been an "encouragement" as far as his critics are concerned, but you can't loose sight of the skill level of the opponent either. The Giants aren't exactly "chopped liver" in the run defense department. Then again, if you don't run for 80 yards on your 1st three carries of the game Colts fans will label you a "bust." It's this kind of mentality that makes me question the IQ level of those who have been the most critical of Richardson. A lot of his struggles can be answered with common sense. If you think Richardson is a "bust" because he isn't "running with burst," or "Isn't precise or decisive with his cuts" you really don't know anything about the RB position or football in general. I trust Ryan Grigson as well as Coach Pagano when it comes to putting the right people in the right place. I also trust my own eyes, and what I see in the Colts this year is a team that finally has all of the right pieces in place to be a serious force, particularly on offense in all facets of the game. Trent Richardson will be a big factor because with the arsenal of weapons Luck has at WR, there's no way opposing teams will be able to stack the box. Keep in mind that against the Giants last night, the Colts played without Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton & moved the ball at will with Nicks, Rogers, Whalen, Allen and Fleener. Make no mistake ladies and gentlemen, the Colts are going to be downright nasty this year on offense. Trent Richardson is going to be just fine regardless of what his critics say. Patience people. Have patience.
