Most Think Colts Should Go WR In Draft, But Adding Dynamic RB Would Take Offense To Another Level

Now that the Colt’s 2015 campaign has come to an end, the speculation has already started on what the team needs to do as far as the draft is concerned. Most critics think the Colts should go WR while others have mentioned O-line and Defensive end as the primary needs of the team. In my analysis of the Colts, I think the area that could use the most help is at RB. That said, one of the players I think who may be available when the Colts are on the clock is standout Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon. In this pass happy era that permeates the league, it’s still been proven that in order to win games in January, you need a capable running game along with a strong defense. That’s one of the things I love about coach Pagano. He still believes in the old school fundamentals of what this game was founded on: "Running and Defense."

While everyone has been calling for more to be put on the shoulders of Andrew Luck, I think what would help him most would be the presence of a dynamic RB. Let’s take a trip down memory lane. Remember when the Colts drafted Edge? They were coming off of a 3-13 season. Enter Edge. The Colts went 13-3 his rookie year. Edgerrin James brought an element to the Colt’s offense that the team hadn’t seen since Eric Dickerson. Unfortunately, he came during a time when Manning didn’t trust Reggie Wayne as much as he did Marvin Harrison, which essentially handcuffed the offense during the early part of his career. So how can a RB help Luck more than a WR? Simple. Luck has already displayed how much of a headache he can be on his one talents, proving capable of beating you from the pocket as well as outside of it. Adding a RB of Gordon’s skill level has the potential to take their offense to the level of the 49ers of the 90s when they were led by Young and Montana. Those 49er offenses were tops in the league and simply a beauty to watch as they effortlessly moved the ball against just about anyone they faced. What made them special was their ability to beat you in a number of different ways. Can you imagine how hard it would be to defend the Colts if they actually had a RB who was a threat to take it the distance at any moment in the game? Melvin Gordon would add that kind of dimension to the offense. In fact, he’s the only RB I would take in the 1st round if he indeed fell to the Colts. If Gordon doesn’t fall to us, the team can address this position in the later rounds with what’s left. Even if they resign Bradshaw, the Colts need to add a RB either via free agency or the draft. No more trading 1st round picks for alleged "bowling balls of butcher knives."

I know there are still a few people out there who think the Colts still need to improve the O-line before even thinking of getting a RB, but I honestly don’t think the line is as bad as what some think. The fact that any running back not named Trent Richardson had success running behind it proves that. The Colts have the pieces in place up front already. They just need time to gel. Injuries held this unit back from having any kind of continuity more than lack of talent. Besides, a dynamic runner can mask deficiencies in an offensive line just as much as an ineffective RB can hinder it (See Trent Richardson). At any rate the Colts are in good shape no matter what direction they need to go in as long as Luck is under center.
