Belichick: Armchair psychology

I wrote this a comment on another board. It fit so well, I thought I'd make a fanpost:

The cheating doesn't negate Brady's skill or Belichick's strategic genius. Brady is one of the best and his coach is a ruthless general.

But that's what makes this maddening. Why cheat? Your that good and you cheat?

Here's the answer: Their massive levels of competitiveness drove them to success. I'm sure other teams taped signals and other QBs tampered with balls to get them in line with QB standards. The Pats heard about these methods, and probably tons of others, and refused to allow another team gain a competitive advantage over them.

Look at how quickly they jumped on the four lineman formations. Or Belichick going to Oregon to study Kelly's offense before he made it to the Eagles. These guys take every advantage they see someone else using, and they grab it and fit it to their own needs. When the memo got sent around to stop taping signals, Belichick kept going because he assumed other teams would (and probably did) and refused to let them have a tactic that he didn't have. I'm sure that the same is true with deflating balls.

But it needs to stop. All cheating. For everyone. And the best way to do that is punish the most visible offender. Sorry Belichick, but you need to be the sacrificial lamb.
