QB carousel and how it affects Indy

There's a lot of QB questions going on around the league, we're blessed to not be counted among those teams (if only we could protect ours....)

Here's a guess as to how some of these teams solve their QB concerns:

Browns trade their #12 pick and a future pick for Jimmy G. This would open the door for the Pats to draft another future backup/ trade chip in the draft (Mallett, Garoppolo, Brissett...) Let's say Patriots draft Brad Kaaya in the 3rd Rd.

With a new starter in Cleveland, say goodbye to RG3. They'll save $7.5M if they cut him.

RG3 signs to replace Romo as a backup in Dallas. The Cowboys can either trade or cut Romo and save around $5M on their cap. Let's say he heads home to Illinois and suits up for the Bears. Chicago saves a ton on their cap if they part ways with Cutler. Drafting a backup would probably be a good idea if Chicago wants to put in Mr. Glass as their starter. Let's go with Davis Webb in the 4th.

Cutler moves on to SF after they rid themselves of Kaepernick. Maybe a short deal with a chance to resurrect his career with Shanahan calling plays. Again, with Cutler as the starter, a backup is pretty important. Josh Dobbs in the 4th. Lots of people are talking about how hard Shanahan's system is for a young QB. What better player to draft and have learn a system than near genius-level Dobbs.

Let's move Kaepernick to Buffalo where they decide they'd rather not have Tyrod Taylor starting. Sefo Liufau gets drafted in the 6th Rd.

Tyrod Taylor ends up in Houston to beat out Osweiler for the starting gig.

So here's how teams "answer" their QB dilemma:

CLE - Garoppolo, Kessler

DAL - Prescott, RG3

CHI - Romo, Webb

SF - Cutler, Gabbert, Dobbs

BUF - Kaepernick, Liufau

HOU - Taylor, Osweiler

NE - Brady, Brissett, Kaaya

This leaves the Jets to pick from Watson, Trubisky, or Kizer in the draft. Teams (NO, ARZ, PIT, KC, LAC, NYG) could draft an heir at QB earlier than expected due to all the Free Agency moves and trades. Teams such as JAC, CIN, or MIA could also draft if they want improved competition for their starters.

So how does this impact Indy?

With New England now having a pick in front of us, they could potentially steal a pass rusher we have targeted. If that trade doesn't happen, Cleveland could target a QB at #12 where as the Patriots could pick one of our targets such as Barnett or Thomas. If the above teams find QB solutions via trade or free agency, that also opens them up for early picks that could take away our targets.

On the flip side, those teams that didn't want to invest their 1st rd picks on the QB position will be using later picks (Webb, Dobbs, Liufau) to address their backup needs. More picks could be made in the middle rounds (3-5) on QBs, giving Indy the opportunity to select from the depth of the draft (secondary players) in those rounds.
