What to make of the Giants collosal win over the Patriots

It could literally take years for us to fully understand the magnitude of the New York Giants win over the New England Patriots. So, to try and write about it a few hours after the final snap is like trying to pen a quick synopsis of War and Peace. For me, and for many of us Colts fans, it's an odd, mixed bag. Other than our own team winning it all last year, I can honestly say that the feeling I have right now is almost as comparable. Almost. It also helps that (on the SB Nation podcast, episode 3) I said the Giants would win this game, and that it would be close.
Yes, I admit it. I am a genius.
Perspective is hard for me right now. I've been disgusted with how the Patriots have played and conducted themselves all year. From Bill Belichick's and Rodney Harrison's cheating to their offense running up scores to their club trademarking "19-0" before a snap in Super Bowl 42 was made, this team deserved the nasty, bitter defeat it got tonight.
18 and no. 18 and uh-oh. 18 and choke. Whatever.
Like the Bears last year and the Seahawks before them, the Pats are now the second best team in football. Winning 18 straight games means absolutely nothing in terms of history unless you win the Super Bowl. They didn't. The 2007 is a disappoint for them. Couldn't have happened to a nicer club.
It would be easy for us to laugh and call Belichick and Brady chokers, because of all the playoff games Peyton and the Colts have lost, they never "choked" away a Super Bowl like this. The Patriots offense was wretched, in particular their running game. Their defense folded big time (again) in the fourth quarter of the biggest game of their season. As I have said from day one: The weakness of this Patriots team is their defense, and without a dominant defense, you cannot win a Super Bowl.
Obviously, Eli Manning was the MVP, putting together two fourth quarter TD drives, the last with two minutes left and scoring with 35 seconds left on a TD pass to Plaxico Burress. The key play on that final TD drive was the Hoodini act Eli made, avoiding numerous pass rushers and throwing the ball downfield to David Tyree, who caught it for a first down.
Ironically, Tyree caught the ball right in front of Rodney Harrison, the HGH doper who is also known as the dirtiest player in football.
There are so many ways to rub this in Patriots fans faces it isn't even funny. Other than the Yankees blowing a 3-0 series lead to the Red Sox, this game was the biggest choke job in sports history. Say what you want about "any given Sunday," but when you are a 14 point favorite and your team is 18-0, you better go out and play inspired football in the Super Bowl and win the damn game. The Pats didn't.
You can rest assured, if the Colts had lost this kind of game, ESPN, Patriot Nation, and just about every other idiot in creation would call it a "choke job." And if that label would apply to the Colts in that situation, it applies to the Pats.
Choke job. Big time.
Does this tarnish Tom Brady's legacy? No, of course not. Brady is human. Shocking, I know. Patriots fans built up a stupid aura about the guy, but the fact is Brady was not good in this year's playoffs. In fact, the Pats offense really sputtered from December through now. Regardless, Brady is still one of the best ever to play the position of QB. Best is he the best? No. Does it tarnish Bill Belichick's legacy? No, but if the new allegations of his cheating are true and do go further back than 2007, that will certainly destroy his legacy and tarnish the reputation of both the Patriots and the NFL.
But all that aside, the night, and the league, belongs to the New York Football Giants. It's nice to see a team win and celebrate with some class, shaking hands with the opponent, and waiting for the final gun before exiting the field. It's nice to see, despite a horrid season of scandal and tragedy, that the good guys won the day. It's nice to see a great player like Michael Strahan win one before he retires. It's nice to see the Giants defense FINALLY get the respect they deserve.
It's nice to see Eli Manning keep the Super Bowl, and the Super Bowl MVP, in the family.
So much for AFC dominance, huh? And how about that NFL parity? Despite all the crap that has happened this year, parity is what makes the NFL the best league in America. Flawed as it is, the NFL still finds a way to amaze. And flawed as they were, the NY Giants are now the best team in football.
Does this improbable win save the 2007 season? No. This season will long be remembered for scandal (Patriots), ugliness (Michael Vick), poor sportsmanship (Patriots again), and senseless tragedy (Sean Taylor). But, for one night, the ugliness was wiped away and we got to see what the NFL really is in its truest, purist form: A league of parity.
A league where anybody can beat anybody any given Sunday.

This seasons Patriots are always going to be remembered as the biggest chokers in the NFL history. And I think that is AWESOME!
Anthony (MasterRWayne), yellowsnow, and I are all in agreeance that the fallout from this loss is going to be colossal. I predict that Seau, Bruschi, and Harrison are all going to retire. Belichick might even end up retiring depending on how far Congress wants to investigate his cheating. They'll probably get rid of Hobbs and Samuel. I just cannot see the Patriots recovering from this loss at all next season. And all I can say to that is "good freakin riddance!"
Amen
The Future
First off, you have to put this game in the proper perspective. The Patriots had won three Super Bowls previously by a combined total of about a touchdown. They were four points away from joining the discussion of "greatest team ever" and "greatest dynasty ever".
With that in mind, this is, truly, the single most devastating loss in the history of professional sports. This isn't a stomach punch game like the Colts seem to have year after year. This is the Patriots, as an organization, having their hearts ripped out and ground into the turf.
Moreover, this is the single biggest choke job in pro sports history. Don't get me wrong; it's not Brady's fault. He spent the whole game either getting acquainted with the turf, or running for his life. No, this one belongs squarely on the shoulders of the defense and the offensive line. Yeah, not so much fun trying to win a playoff game when you have "protection problems", is it? Then again, I'd imagine Brady is rather familiar with those. Just ask Bridget Moynahan. The defense, a unit that is either "experienced and veteran" or "aging badly", just decided to roll over and just let the Giants win.
My personal thoughts? The Pats won't get up. They can't get up. This isn't the '06 Colts that had built around a core of young players and amazing players, got their butts handed to them by the Steelers, and came back all fired up to win the next year. This is a veteran team that won more games in a single season than any other team in history. This was the best offense in NFL history. This was a team that had won three Super Bowls in six years.
In the coming days, you could see a lot of retirements. Bruschi will be a free agent, and is unlikely to want to play somewhere else for a year or two and call it quits. Seau is just ineffective and needs to retire. Harrison has lost a couple of steps, and should probably retire as well. Randy Moss will get a monster offer from Washington, and I can't see him passing it up. Stallworth might be back, but he might not. Asante Samuels is a free agent, and can't be franchised again. He's also probably headed for greener pastures. Also, Maroney is edging toward bust status.
This doesn't even begin to cover Spygate. What happens if the Senate starts having hearings? Does Kraft force Belichick out? Is keeping the best coach in the NFL worth it if it's going to tarnish your championships even further? If Kraft forces Belichick out, I can't see him coaching anywhere else. The NFL could also quietly force him into retirement. There's also the possibility of a single or multi-year ban, which would probably also have the same result.
Ultimately, what we watched tonight was the end of an era. An aging team at the end of it's run put it all on the field for 60 minutes, and came up just short. At this point, you have to pencil the Pats in to the playoffs, because they just don't have competition in the AFC East. But that won't always be the case. The Jets are getting better. The Dolphins could give the Pats a game once in a while. Buffalo could as well. So it won't always be the case. The Patriots simply don't have young players to build around without a significant drop off in talent.
So, because this is a Colts blog, how does this tie into the Colts? Well, there's always room for another dynasty. The Colts are young, aggressive, and now a little more experienced. Their key contributors have won a Super Bowl. The only player in danger of retiring at this point is Harrison, and maybe Saturday. When they're healthy, I'm not sure that there's a team in the league that can hang with them. At this point, their main competition, not rival, is San Diego. They're a younger version of the Patriots. But at the same time, they still have Norv Turner, and Philip Rivers is still a question mark.
All in all, we've entered a brave new world. Here, anything is possible.
Will they get up?
But, my God, it feels good to see them fail. I'm just going to savor that for now.
thank god they lost
patriots fans have really got to hate the name MANNING right now..
maybe now all the pats trolls will bugger off. Guess it is pretty hard to win if you can't tape the other team and figure out their moves in advance.
Some Youtube fun...
And if anyone knows football parody songs on Youtube, you know who BradyFan83 is. He did a song for Eli before the big game, that turned out to be more true than he thought... too bad for the last 20 seconds of the song though! HA HA!
Are the Mannings in Belicheat's head?
Dear Tom,
Sorry you got beat by my kid brother. Did that bring back painful memories of last year's AFC championship? Hang in there buddy.
Sincerely,
Peyton
Dear Tiki,
Fuck you.
Sincerely,
Eli
Dear Bill,
Go to hell you cheating son of a bitch.
Sincerely,
The entire sports world minus N.E. homers and sports writers.
Thank you karma for finally showing your face. I wonder if it stings NE fans even more that they got beat by Peyton's little brother. I'm so happy to be able to return to this site and not have to deal with complete jerk off Patriot trolls. I'm so happy I can go back to watching sports shows and not hear any more Patriot ball washing. My hat is off to the NY Giants and Eli Manning for playing unbelievably inspired football. It seems we are starting a new dynasty - a Manning dynasty. Keep it in the family next year Peyton. I can't wait to see you back in pads D Free. Go Horse!
yeah, so much for the misperceived
The Giants win also proved the best division in football in the NFC East, which produced a 13-3 team and SB Champ.

Terry... you so crazy.
It should have been the Cowboys winning that game last night and Romo being crowned MVP, not the Giants or Eli although they did deserve it, however, we all know the Cowboys are a much better team and thats whats really disheartening about the whole thing.
In Romo we Trust

they are probably
Still here
Eventually the pressure just amounted up, and the Pats finally cracked. I can live with that.
And dispite the fact that I am still thining about Asante missing that easy pick off, I also do take some joy in seeing everyone attack the Pats right now when atleast they made it to the Superbowl, which is more then any other team not named the Giants can say.

You're thinking too far son...
You may end up going down to one of the resurgent teams in the AFC before you even get to meet Peyton & co.

And it's the same for us
Here's hoping both teams are good enough to make it to the AFC Championship game for another one of the ages.
True
But it's good to dish it out to a Pats fan ;) and now the Giants may actually have solidified the blueprint for beating the Pats, an insight into Brady's character maybe. Watch for either the Steelers or Chargers to blitz like madmen before we do.
Blitz
So no blueprint, but if you have the personal to try it, its atleast wirth a shot.
