On his first day as the Cowboys' receivers coach, the meticulous Raymond Berry demonstrated how to run a sideline route to rookies. Berry made his usual precise numbers of steps, cut toward the sideline and landed -- 1 foot out of bounds.

"The field is too narrow, Tom," he announced to Coach Landry.

"No, Raymond," Landry said, "we've been out here forever."

This was the sixth year the Cowboys had practiced on the same field without complaint, yet Berry instinctively found it out of line.

"Either the hashmarks aren't right or the field is too narrow," the former Baltimore Colts star receiver insisted. Landry shrugged, called for a tape measure, and field dimensions were plotted to the exact inch.

Berry's sense of precision was validated. The field was 11 inches too narrow.

Perhaps Peyton Manning will back earlier than initially believed. Appearing on the "Waddle & Silvy" show on ESPN radio in Chicago Friday morning, Colts coach Tony Dungy said that he expects Manning to be back on the field with three weeks left to go in the preseason.

Peyton had a little knee surgery today, but never fear! It was only a minor operation. He may miss the first few weeks of training camp, but recovery time from this operation is 4-6 weeks, so he'll be back in plenty of time for the regular season.

All those fist-pumping, end zone-dancing hot dogs in the NFL have a new way to keep their cool: air-conditioned shoulder pads.

Blowing cool, dry air underneath football pads after vigorous exercise appears to hold core temperature down, reduce heart rate and provide the player with a sense of being cooler, researchers at the University of Florida report.

The specially designed pads have been used during games (on the sidelines) by a number of NFL and college teams -- including the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and UCLA Bruins -- but hadn't been tested for their effects on actual temperature, says lead author MaryBeth Horodyski, director of research at the university's Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.

Air conditioned shoulder pads are all the rage nowadays! I'm not sure who did or didn't use them last year, but if Dan Klecko didn't, I'll be shocked.

Let's fix an injustice

As you probably know, like mgrex03, I'm a resident of Northern Virginia, so I can't put in a suggestion for the new nickname for Fort Wayne's baseball team. However, I'm guessing that most Stampede Blue readers are Indiana residents, so you can help in this effort to give the team a nickname that will restore order to the world.

This is a worthy cause and you know it.

If I play five more years in Toronto that would be great. And I'm only young once, so I didn't want to look back in 10 years and say two myself that I shoulda kept playing.

And I don't feel I need to prove anything to anybody (in the NFL). I've been very successful already, north and south of the border. I just wanna improve on what I do.

Well, it's nice to see Mike Vanderjagt landed on his feet, I guess.
