Community Mock Draft

With the 32nd Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Pittsburgh selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose State

32. Pittsburgh Steelers

Drafter: Colts9318rock

Reasons for drafting: "Jarron can step right into the Steeler's D-line and be a contributing player. The Steelers have the same typical idea of drafting the best player available like the Colts. Jarron is is a huge DE at 6-5 and 287 pounds. Despite his height/weight, Jarron has incredible agility and developing speed (40 time:5.04). Jarron is the perfect 3-4 defensive end and will likely have a huge impact on the Steeler's D-line as a rookie. His negatives are him being slow off the snap and Jarron has problems using his hands to shed blocks. Despite these negatives the Steelers would not pass up the chance to draft Jarron."

With this pick, we close the first round. If we want to finish the second round in time for draft day, we'll need to zip through it. We'll only do write-ups for the Bears and Cowboys, since those mockers didn't get to do a write-up for the first round. We'll start posting second round picks in bunches on Monday.

With that, Detroit and Coltsfanawalt are now on the clock...

With the 31st Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Arizona selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut

31. Arizona Cardinals
NFL TEAM
Reasons for drafting: Areas or need for the cards are: running back, DE/OLB, 3-4 DE, ILB, OL Dept. The cards were busy in the FA period adding Bryant Mcfadden a shut down corner who should see plenty of playing time, RB Jason Wright, TE Anthony Becht, and FB Dan Krieder. They also resigned re-signed several of their FA’s most notably Kurt Warner, Bert Berry, and Gabe Watson.
I spent some time over at ROTB (revengeofthebirds.com) it seemed like the consensus was RB and OLB were the biggest concerns, it’s a deep draft for DE/OLB and there should be some good value in rounds 2-5 for OLB’s
The running game was sub-par most of last year, and I don’t think all the blame can go on the RB’s. The run blocking just wasn’t that good, however, It will only be the 2nd year they’re together, another year working with Russ Grim shouldn’t hurt either. If they do add some help to the O line I think it will be later in the draft.
Donald Brown was listed as a 1st or 2nd round talent, he may be a bit of a reach here, but, he is such a complete back and his box numbers were really impressive. The forty was ok 4.46, but, the short shuttle 4.10 is very good and the 41" vert. jump was the best of all the RB’s at the combine. I think his short shuttle and long shuttle were second of all RB’s the combine. He is also a great character guy and would probably fit in with the Cardinals right away.

With the 30th Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Tennessee selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt

30. Tennessee Titans

Drafter: hoosierdore

Reasons for drafting: "With the Titans committing to Kerry Collins and Chris Johnson emerging as one of the elite (albeit illiterate) running backs in the league, I see the Titans continuing to transform into a smash mouth football team that will hammer away on the ground in a manner similar to the Steelers or Ravens. A star WR would be nice, but the Titans still wouldn’t be a team scoring 30-some points a game. With Chris Carr going to Baltimore and Nick Harper slowing down, D.J. Moore could fill numerous holes and will bring a strong work ethic to the Titans. At local Vanderbilt University, D.J. Moore has proven to be a shutdown corner who has enough versatility to also serve as a return specialist, wide receiver, and even running back.

Scouts say Moore's reaction time and instincts make him a natural for zone coverage, and he closes well on routes. As a receiver, he has very quick feet on routes, is good in the open field and has reliable hands; he uses those skills as a corner and is sure-handed during interceptions and interception returns.

I may just be talking up my Alma Mater, but the Titans made a big mistake when they chose VY over Cutler a few years ago. Now the Titans have a chance to redeem themselves by picking a highly motivated, talented football player right out of their own backyard. In this draft, the Jaguars selected a WR, Andre Johnson is one of the best WRs in the league who has never had a legit QB to throw him the ball, and the Colts are ready to return to an offensive powerhouse (I hope). A young cornerback who can also help out with returns and WR could help the Titans remain on top of the AFC South. Consider him Pacman Jones with character and a brain."

With the 29th Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, New York Giants selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

Eben Britton, OT, Arizona

29. New York Giants

Drafter: MasterRWayne

Reasons for drafting: "Eben Britton is part of one of the most talented tackle classes in a long time. He has size, strength, technique, experience (3 year starter) and durability (37 consecutive starts). In addition, to this he is constantly graded as someone who is "coach able" a "natural leader" and has excellent awareness.

Some might not like this pick because they view the Giants as having one of the best Offensive Lines in the league right now and I agree that they do, but they are good only on the surface. There are a few issues which Britton addresses for them...

1. The Giants have ZERO depth in their O-Line and when they suffered injuries last year the play of the line greatly lagged. The Giants are also aging across the entire O-Line with the youngest starter being 29 years old.

2. The current starter at LT for the Giants is David Diehl who is very good, but he is a guard converted to tackle and struggles sometimes against speed rushers. If Britton can develop at LT that allows the Giants to move Diehl back to his natural position of LG where he is a pro-bowler. Therefore, Britton has the potential to upgrade two positions at LT and LG. Britton also has experience playing RT. Its a win-win.

I agree that the Giants have needs at WR, but Britton is more valuable than a WR here. His impact will be immediate whereas a WR could take 3-4 years to fully develop and the Giants are a team that can easily win it all this year. Also, remember that they have poured picks into their WR positions with Manningham (3rd round pick last year) looking to see more time this year. There will be opportunities for the Giants to upgrade their WR/TE's in later rounds and a talented tackle like Britton is too good to pass up for an unpolished WR this early in the draft."

With the 28th Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Philadelphia selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State

28. Philadelphia Eagles (from Carolina Panthers)

Drafter: monstersbox

Reasons for drafting: "Simply put, the Eagles are in dire need of a RB. Westbrook is amazing when he's healthy, but even when healthy, he is far from a power runner. While some people say he doesn't fit the system, I'd completely disagree. I think Chris "Beanie" Wells as a tandem back with Westbrook would actually be a perfect backfield. What is the point of drafting another RB similar to the same Westbrook that couldn't get a 3rd and short or stay healthy? Not only do I know, not think, that Wells is the best PURE runner in the entire draft, but I think he has every tool required to be proficient (at worst) and able to perform what would be required of him in a two back system and an eventual featured back.

Just think about it for a second. Chris Wells is a 235 lb running back who ran a 4.38 40 yard dash and has displayed highlights that would impress Bo Jackson and Jim Brown. For all intents and purposes he's the 15 lb heavier version of Adrian Peterson. You line up Westbrook in the slot and Wells in the backfield or as split backs and tell me you still need a wide receiver with Jackson and Curtis. Power back plus receiving/scat back is one of the most dominating ways to play when you have the speed of Jackson and the arm and scrambling (McNabb can still scoot when he wants) of McNabb. Opposing teams will be surrounded by threats. And at 28, I feel like choosing the running back considered by close to a 50/50 split with Moreno as the top back is a steal."

With the 27th Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Indianapolis selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

Evander "Ziggy" Hood, DT, Missouri

27. Indianapolis Colts

Drafter: BigBlueShoe

Reasons for drafting: "The reasons are obvious. Hood offers the best option currently available at defensive tackle, and DT is a major need going into the draft. Hood offers size speed, quickness, and power. Is he someone who will play in a ton of Pro Bowls? Maybe not. Is he someone who can anchor the Colts defense, or provide a stable pass rush from the three tech spot? Yes.

I considered drafting Phil Loadholt or Ebben Britton here, but since so much was used last year to shore up the o-line, I figured the d-line needed some new blood. Thus, Ziggy Hood.

And yes, if Mark Sanchez had been here at #27, I would have drafted him... and so will Bill Polian if that situation happens."

With the 26th Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Baltimore selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

26. Baltimore Ravens

Drafter: shake n bake

Reasons for drafting: This situation would cause a massive schism in the Baltimore fanbase. The local hero at a obvious need position, or the BPA who could contribute, will be needed down the line, but would likely be pushing out a fan favorite. Before the Foxworth, Carr and Rolle (re-)signings I would have gone with neither and taken Man-CB extraordinaire Sean Smith, but now Baltimore has a solid CB corps allowing them to get Flacco another target. Too much of DHB's appeal seems to be local ties and a blazing 40, neither of which are great reasons for a pick, leaving me with TE Brandon Pettigrew (who visited with the Ravens yesterday).

Pettigrew will give them a badly needed receiving threat while also improving the running game that the offense was built off of. TE is a well stocked position at the moment, but Todd Heap has been a shadow of himself and his slated to make 14 million in salary over the next two seasons. The Ravens added "Franchise Player" L.J. Smith on a one year contract, you only need to hear the bitterness and sarcasm that Eagles fans said "Franchise Player" with to understand why Smith isn't much of an answer. The Ravens get a player who has been projected as high as #11 overall who can improve both their passing and running game.

With the 25th Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Miami selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

25. Miami Dolphins
NFL TEAM

Drafter: King Richard

Reasons for drafting: "Do I maybe take a gamble on a pass rusher or corner that may not be legit first round talent? Or do I go with the overall BPA. I think it's quite obvious what I opted for. I couldn't think of a single reason why I shouldn't draft Harvin. Ronnie Brown isn't going to bust out 60+ yard runs for touchdowns (unless he plays the Pats every week). Ted Ginn isn't going to catch bombs from Pennington in stride to burn defenses. But this Percy fellow on the other hand, he possesses that homerun ability. He'd carve through AFC East teams like a hawt knife through buttah. With the addition of Harvin, the Dolphins would have a good running back tandem, two legit outside receiving threats, and a deadly slot receiver. Sounds like a pretty sick offense. Besides, someone had to draft him, right? RIGHT?!"
