Recap: Jacksonville vs. Houston

Sports Network | September 28, 2008

Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - Josh Scobee nailed a 37-yard field goal on the first possession of overtime, and the Jacksonville Jaguars escaped a determined effort from the Houston Texans, 30-27, in an AFC South matchup from Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

David Garrard continually kept the Jags in the game with his arm and legs, hitting on 23-of-32 passes for 236 yards and a score while running for 41 yards, with a touchdown, on seven carries.

After gaining 228 yards on the ground last week against the Colts, Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor combined for only 57 yards on 17 rushes. Matt Jones was the recipient of five passes for 71 yards and a score for the Jaguars (1-2), who were coming off a big division victory at Indy's Lucas Oil Stadium.

Montell Owens added a 41-yard touchdown run on a fake punt direct snap.

Matt Schaub was impressive in completing 29-of-40 pass attempts for 307 yards and three touchdowns for Houston (0-3). Kevin Walter caught two of those touchdowns and hauled in eight total passes for 76 yards. Steve Slaton gained just 33 yards rushing on 10 carries but nabbed eight passes for 83 yards including a 30-yard score for the Texans, who remain winless in the midst of three straight tests against AFC South opponents.

It was announced this week that Houston will play its home opener next Sunday against the Colts at Reliant Stadium as scheduled. The stadium sustained damage from the effects of Hurricane Ike on September 13.

Schaub drove Houston downfield for a game-tying field goal with one second to play in regulation. But Jacksonville won the coin flip and wasted no time in driving 51 yards on six plays, buoyed by completions of 24 and 22 yards to Matt Jones and Greg Jones, respectively, setting up Scobee for the game- winning field goal less than four minutes into the extra period.
