Favre, Johnson, Reed selected as AFC's top players

Sports Network | October 01, 2008

New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre, Kansas City linebacker Derrick Johnson and Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed have been selected as the AFC's top players for Week 4 of the NFL season.

Favre was the top offensive player after throwing a career-high six touchdown passes in his 257th consecutive start as the Jets defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 56-35. He went 24-for-34 with 289 yards and an interception for a passer rating of 123.7 in the game. His six TD passes tied Hall of Famer Joe Namath for most touchdown passes in a game by a Jets quarterback. Favre's previous career-high was five touchdowns, which he accomplished three times, and it was also the 20th time he threw four or more touchdowns in a game. It is his first weekly award in the AFC.

Johnson nabbed defensive honors as he posted seven tackles, one-half sack, one interception and one forced fumble in Kansas City's 33-19 win over the Denver Broncos. In his fourth year in the NFL, it is his first weekly award and the first Chief to win the defensive award since safety Bernard Pollard in Week 17 of 2006.

Reed earned special teams honors after hitting a 46-yard field goal in overtime to help the Steelers to a 23-20 victory over Baltimore. It was the seventh game-winning field goal of his career. He made all three of his field goal attempts (49, 19, 46 yards) in the game and totaled 11 points. This is the third weekly honor in his seven-year career.
