Report: Giants' Umenyiora done for season

Sports Network | August 24, 2008

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will miss the entire 2008 season after injuring his left knee in Saturday's 10-7 preseason loss to the New York Jets, according to a report in the Newark Star-Ledger.

Umenyiora had to be carted off the field in the second quarter of Saturday's setback, and an MRI on Sunday revealed serious ligament damage. Opting against short-term rehab, New York decided to plan for the long-term and have its only Pro-Bowler from last season undergo surgery. The procedure will likely keep Umenyiora on the sidelines for the season.

Since being drafted in the second round (56th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft, Umenyiora has recorded 41 1/2 sacks.

The injury occurred with 10:48 left in the stanza following an incomplete pass by Brett Favre on third down.

Umenyiora started all 16 games last season for the Giants and earned his second Pro Bowl selection after totaling 52 tackles along with a team-high 13 sacks.
