If I had 9 kids, I'd smoke pot too

I understand life can be tough. We all make stupid decisions; I mean, really, really dumb ones. Denver Broncos RB Travis Henry, a player who owns the Colts defense so completely it isn't funny, has also made some dumb decisions in his life. Unless you've lived under a rock the last few months, you might have heard that ole Travis has fathered 9 children by 9 different women. Recently, Travis was busted for failing a marijuana drug test.

Listen, if I had 9 kids to feed, and 9 different women scratching and clawing to get a piece of my yearly salary, I'd probably smoke weed too. Lots of it. Enough to make Ricky Williams go, "Damn, son! That's a lot of hash."

Now before you scream that I'm advocating that people smoke pot, relax a second and hear me. I'm not condoning anything. I'm simply trying to inject a bit of flawed, human realism to this. Mile High Report is already calling for Shanahan to cut Travis. I believe Travis has got $12 million in guaranteed money coming to him this year. That money is in serious jeopardy now that he's failed a drug test. Travis is suing the league now in a desperate attempt to play this Sunday. In all likelihood, Travis' suit will fail, and the league will suspend him one year. This is his fourth drug violation with the league.

We are all guilty of making bad decisions. That is, in no way, excusing Travis' rather dumb behavior. Getting caught four times with weed means you're stupid. NFL players, like Rodney Harrison, are able to hide HGH and steriod use. Weed is a pretty easy thing to hide, and you should NOT be smoking it if it will cost you $12 million dollars. Stoned out surfers with pot beards that touch their toes will tell you that.

I get the sense that Travis, with all his kids and all these women fighting to get a piece of him, just got tired one day. Football is physically and emotionally taxing as is. Add to it these complications, and I have an understanding as to why Travis might sit in his easy chair one evening and toke on a doobie.

Stupid? Yes. A nice glass of scotch or a dirty martini would do the same thing Travis: Calm you down. Heck, for many of us, a nice cold beer does the trick. Work is hard. Kids are screaming. Wife bitchin' about the mortgage. Monday Night Football was created specifically for people who wanted to come home, kick off their shoes, pop open a beer, and enjoy football. Life melts away. Troubles disappear. It's just you, your beer, and football. The simple things.

So, while Travis' stupidity might hurt him yet again, I will actually reserve judgment on him. No, it has nothing to do with him owning my team's defense, running all over them as if they had yellow highway lane dividers painted on their unis. I just know that, like many of you, I've made stupid decisions too. We all have. It might be a bit too harsh to say CUT HIM right now. I don't know. If he does get suspended, I sincerely hope that when he comes back he's able to feed his kids and live comfortably.

We all do stupid things, but very few deserve misery. I hope Travis lands on his feet. I really do.

The guy is a disgrace
He can run the ball, but Henry is beyond repair. Being busted a 4th time (4th TIME!) that violates the substance abuse policy should tell you that he has had enough chances.

I like your posts BBS, but you're dead wrong on this one. Fathering 9 children by 9 different women and jeopardizing his ability to feed HIS kid's mouths by doing something illegal is just as stupid as what Vick did. It screams of the irresponsiblity that has infected society.

I don't want to go too deep on this issue because we all have our opinion, but just think about this: there is no way that once his career is over he will be able to pay child support to feed 9 kids. I see "failure to pay child support charges" all over him; the guy is a future jail inmate, no doubt about it.

well
Fact of the matter is, weed should be legalized anyways.
Go Colts!

No........
No........Fact of the matter is that this guy has had 3 chances in the NFL to get his act together and 9 chances to wear a rubber.

Forget this guy...he's a piece of crap.

I do fully agree that marijuana should be legal though.

hahahah
granted, henry is a complete idiot for risking his salary and career over this, but it is in no way comparable with michael vick's, umm, legal transgressions.

i kind of thought the same thing as BBS when i read about this.  all i can say is this: HAHAHAHAHA!!!

as if having 9 kids by 9 women wasn't enough bad luck...he needs to go through a family and good livin' class with samkon gado or something.

Kudos on the headline.
Anyone ever read Eric Schlosser's Reefer Madness? Remember Schlosser, the guy who made the excellent Fast Food Nation and then contributed to the screenplay of the execrable Fast Food Nation? Anyways, in RM he asserts quite cogently that American marijuana laws are founded in early century racism against blacks and Latinos.

Come on....
This is not a Marijuana issue.this is a RESPONSIBILITY issue.

Fact of the matter is, and I agree that marijuana should be legalized, it IS illegal.

by Levante on Oct 7, 2007 2:46 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Legalize?
Yeah sure, why not?  After all, it's not like marijuana is a mood altering substance that affects your ability to drive or anything.  Wait...it does?  Hmmm.

Well at least it doesn't have any negative health benefits on the brain like brain damage, loss of coordination, or difficulty in decision making. What? All those things too?

It quadruples the risk of heart disease, increases the risk of secondary infections (due to suppression of the immune system), gives users 50 to 70% MORE carcinogens than cigarette smoke, tripling the risk of cancer of the head or neck.

Yeah. Why not legalize such a beneficial substance? Why do they keep us from our reefer?

gaijga
It's not any worse or better for your body than smoking and drinking brohemian.  Not to mention, it would certainly help with the over-crowding in prisons we have going on.  The government could make so much more money taxing people for it, and using that money towards our schools which are in desperate need for money, roads, etc etc etc, as compared to spending tax money on prisons.

by KingRichard on Oct 6, 2007 9:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Indeed
Let's not forget the appetite stimulant properties of marijuana, which are beneficial.  Also, the percentage of carcinogens would be dramatically decreased with filters on marijuana cigarettes; unfortunately, due to the substance's illegality, filters are not really a viable option for marijuana smokers.

Furthermore, there has never been a documented case of marijuana overdose; most marijuana related deaths are caused by reckless users (IE: driving while under the influence) or other drugs mixed in with the marijuana.  In this regard, jaywalking is more deadly than marijuana.  But if I jaywalk, I won't go to jail.

These are the inconsistencies marijuana advocates point out in support of decriminalization of marijuana.  And yes, I know my name is Endo; And yes, it is a double entendre.

by Endo on Oct 6, 2007 9:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

zing!
Not to mention if marijuana was infact legalized, I'm sure they'd place the same laws and restrictions on it as alcohol and tobacco has.
Go Colts!

Tax
I am all for legalizing marijuana, but sadly the government makes A LOT of money out of busting people for is. Also, you don't think lawyers make a killing off of all the stupid pot charges that go on in this country.

by MasterRWayne on Oct 6, 2007 10:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Educate me...
how does the government make money?

I think the beer lobby is the reason.  If everyone started smoking pot, they would stop buying beer and start buying pizza.

If it gets legalized, buy Papa John's stock.

Free investment tip.

by will on Oct 6, 2007 11:02 PM EDT   0 recs

This is not ......
This is NOT a Marijuana issue....it IS a responsibility issue.

If Henry was an honorable human being, he would not jeopardize his ability to pay for 9 kid's mouts to feed, instead of leaving the responsibility to the tax payers.

This is his FOURTH offense and the Broncos organization took a chance on him. They have every right to cut his ass. Ultimately, the tax payers will end up paying for his sins....do you understand that?

The cycle continues.........

by Levante on Oct 7, 2007 2:50 AM EDT   0 recs

Yeah
That's a solid tip Will!

As for the government making money you really have to realize that most people arrested for marijuana do not go to jail. They go on probation and they have THOUSANDS of dollars for court costs, drug test and other things. In the end the government makes a tidy sum off of each arrest. Now of course when someone goes to jail the government pays for their incarceration, but I wouldn't be surprised if the bean-counters figured this out to be a net gain in the end.

Self Control Issue
I see this as more of a self control issue with Henry. Nine kids with nine different women? Buy a box of rubbers for heavens sakes, it's not like Henry can't afford them. With as much money that Henry has at stake, he should have quit after getting caught the first time. Now Henry is suing the NFL saying the tests are faulty. This young man needs to learn how to accept responsibility for his own actions and deal with the consequences.

by Bucsfan on Oct 7, 2007 11:23 AM EDT   0 recs

9 kids...
I still can't wrap my mind around that... the man must have super sperm.  I imagine all he has to do is look at a woman and she's pregnant.

His child support payments must be astronomical...

Go Colts!

Wilt Chamberlain
I'm guessing that he is going to end up with some kind of STD.  Bummer for the Broncos.

by Picky on Oct 7, 2007 2:38 PM EDT   0 recs

thats halarious BBS
"If I had 9 kids, I'd smoke pot too."

thats is really funny.

by Terry on Oct 7, 2007 2:43 PM EDT   0 recs

lawsuit
I get the feeling this lawsuit isn't Travis Henry's idea.  It's his lawyer and the 9 lawyers for the 9 women looking after their gravy train.
