Early Games Open Thread

The Colts don't play until this evening, but some very interesting games are slotted for later this afternoon. SD and Tennessee are at 1pm, and Pittsburgh visits New England at 4:15pm. This is an open thread for those and many other games.

There are also some article that came out recently that discuss the Colts, in general. I guess this is  part of the fallout from beating Jacksonville. Apparently, when you are 10-2 and you are the defending Super Bowl Champions, it kind of makes it hard to ignore you (unless you're ESPN, who will ignore anything and everything if it doesn't fit their narrative.)

  • Good article from Fort Wayne about how the Colts have adjusted their style in order to win despite injuries.
New England and Pittsburgh remain trendy picks, which is strange since the Steelers have lost three times and, upon recent review, Indianapolis won the last Super Bowl.

But the so-called experts seemed to have readjusted their expectations of the Colts (10-2) in the face of their medical status.

The Colts did some readjusting of their own. They focused on winning efficiently instead of winning pretty. They swallowed their pride and scrapped their usual methods, even though it meant they'd play some ugly games, because they knew the long run was more important than vanity.

That's why the ball was going to unheard-of running back Luke Lawton when a huge touchdown was needed against the Jaguars, why defensive end Robert Mathis was taken out of his comfort zone and put on the right side, why the Colts rarely sent the ball into an unsafe zone.

  • Pro Football Weekly has an article about the evolution of Peyton Manning.
In a dabble of irony, when you ask people around the league about Manning, known especially for his intellect, the first topic most want to talk about is how much stronger he is than earlier in his career. Evidence lies in pictures, in the way he sheds oncoming pass rushers.

He throws the ball better than he did the previous year. He takes a perceived weakness and grinds it down to where it can't be used against him, usually transforming it into a strength.

"One of his detriments was that he couldn't throw while running," Simms says. "Now he's borderline very good at it. ... His footwork is the best in the NFL. People say he's not very athletic, well, I don't know about that. His footwork is tremendous in the pocket. He can reset and get in position to throw the ball faster than anyone in the league."

  • Should Tebo have won the Heisman?
  • Shockingly, Jacksonville DE Paul Spicer was fined for acting like a whiny bitch after his team got beat by the Colts.
  • LOL. Dennis Green plans to trademark is famous rant following the Cardinals losing to the Bears on MNF last year.
Enjoy the early games. Colts open thread up later this evening. Seriously, who is rooting for Pittsburgh and who is rooting for NE?

Rooting interest
Great articles.  The one about Peyton's evolution damn near brought a tear to my eye.  Sometimes when I'm watching the Colts play, I think about how different things would be if we didn't have 18.  Then I think about how, someday, we won't, and just how suck it will be when that happens.  I think about the last ten years, and how lucky I am to get to watch one of the greatest to ever play the game.  Just when I start to get a little veclempt, Peyton throws another touchdown, I spill beer all over myself, and the warm fuzzies return.

As far as todays game, I think I am rooting for New England.  The way I figure, even if they lose this game, go 15-1, and win the superbowl, people   will still call them one of the greatest teams of all time.  As Colts fans, we need to think in terms of the big kahuna burger.  We want to win the superbowl, and having a higher seed helps that cause.  The only way this "New England is the greatest team ever" talk can be stopped is by beating them in the playoffs.  To do that, we don't want the horse having to go on the road twice to win the AFC.  Wait, did I say I was rooting for New England?  Fuck that.  I refuse.  Is there any way both of them can lose?

Excellent article on Peyton.  We all better enjoy him while he is here.  It is going to be a long time before we see an athlete of his talent again.

New England/Pittsburgh
From a strategic standpoint, it makes more sense to root for New England since they're probably not going to give up the #1 seed and Pittsburgh is our competition for the #2 seed. Still, I can't help myself. I'm rooting for Pittsburgh.

I want to see Moss jammed up and hit hard. I want to see Brady flustered and rushed. And, more than anything, I want to see Belichick cry like a little bitch.

Pats-Steelers
I completely understand that Pittsburgh losing helps the Colts more, but I can't root for the Pats. There isn't a team in the league I would root against while they played New England. Knowing a Pitt loss would help the Colts and my fantasy football team riding on Brady will keep me from crying myself to sleep if the Pats do win, but mark me down for the Steelers.

Lose-Lose
Put me in the camp of "hoping they both lose".

Honestly, it is better for the Colts if the Steelers lose. It would be nice to see the Patriots lose a game, but the Steelers losing would give us more of a cushion and help us secure the bye-week, which is going to be critical.

I'm torn.
A Steelers loss does nothing for us except cement our #2 seed position...but I'm not worried about losing that, 'cause I don't think we are going to lose any more games.  A Patriots win keeps everybody talking about "the perfect team."  Grr.  That ticks me off. But a Patriots loss would give the Steelers a morale boost (after almost losing to the Dolphins...they need it ;-) ) which we don't want them to have if we end up facing them in the playoffs.  But a Patriots loss would maybe light a fire under the Pats and make them try harder.  Maybe we want them complacent.  Arrrggggghhh.  I guess I will just watch.

heck of a comeback
there's a heck of a comeback going on in Tennessee right now. That last drive by SD was a plain great drive. I'm shocked that Norv Tuner did the smart thing with the three straight passes on the goal line. save the clock chewing run attempt for 4th down when you are that close.

I know. "Norv Turner" and "did the smart thing" in the same sentence. I am as surprised as you are.

WTH Play of the Day
Brady throws it to Moss, who's got two guys incoming. He drops back and throws it back to Brady on the other side of the field. Brady connects with a waiting Gaffney for the TD.

Seriously, what the hell? The more I watch this game, the less and less likely I think a Pittsburgh win is.

Goat of the Year
This Anthony Smith is a douchebag.  Guarantee a win, then allow 2 long ass TD passes?  Strong play pup.

Aaaaan the Steelers fall apart
Pats and Steelers almost start a fight after one of the Steelers shoves Brady and Mankins pile drives another one.

Pitt down by three scores, and I really don't think they have a chance. However, I'd put even money on Harrison taking out Brady's knees.

13-0
Pats defeat Steelers, who didn't sniff the end zone in the second half. Is there anyone that can beat these guys? THEY CAN'T RUN THE BALL OR STOP THE RUN!
