Theismann Strikes Again
You should check out Joe Theismann's new article where he plays the trumpet for the greatness of the Gaytriots. They are of course better because they spent a ton of money and draft picks on high profile players from teams that didn't seem too attached to them. And the Chargers? They have LT so they are automatically the most awesomest team on the planet, besides New England, for whom all must bow before. Just set aside the fact that they have an ENTIRELY NEW COACHING STAFF and probably whole new schemes to learn. LT makes everyone super smart.
As for the Speed Blue and White? Well, we surely didn't upgrade anything, except maybe slot receiver - because Gonzo just might be better than an injured Brandon Stokely. I mean really, we let VETERAN players go away, so we are automatically retarded. So apparently the Colts defense that owned the postseason is going to be worse off with the biggest playmakers (Hayden and Jackson) coming in as starters this season, oh, and Bob Sanders being healthy and ready to go at the start of the season. Who's Bob Sanders? The only legitimate knock is maybe not finding a first-class running mate for Addai, but only time will tell if one of these guys pop out of training camp with a chip on their shoulder and prove themselves on this level.
But that only makes us incrementally better than the Broncs. That's because Mike Shanahan is an offensive genius again, somehow, and their offense is "balanced". Doesn't even mention that Denver now has one of the best CB tandems in football in Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly. Oh well, if they're not LT, Donte Stallworth, or Randy Moss, they aren't worth mentioning in Joe Theismann's world.

Yep...
Even if the Colts' defence isn't in the mood to tackle your 4th string running back you know you defensive coordinator will be rolling up the sheets like a seiner the night before.
The Colts always count as a tough knot in your schedule. The Patriots adding all these guys to their roster--they will be tossing and turning going into the RCA Dome. They know even if Theismann doesn't.

Bullseye
The only issue here is the D. People have this perception that we are soft on the run. Athlon Sports' new Pro Football magazine previewing this season has an extensive article on Cover 2 (refusing to mention Tampa 2, though they describe Tampa 2 to a T when talking about Cover 2 systems), and they say that it just is soft on the run. We allowed, what 173 yards rushing a game? That makes it look like teams can just pound it out on the ground and have complete control over game tempo. We need an answer for this. We've been able to stop rushing-based offenses before out of our base Cover 2 look, we need to bring that back.
But offensively? No way, we've been the offense to stop for some time now. And with Marvelous, Wayne, Gonzo, Clark, Utecht, and Addai (maybe Moorehead?) all looking like legitimate targets for Peyton to strike, defensive coordinators' heads are going to be spinning. The most they can do is stop Addai from racking up the 1500 yards he could grind out in 16 games starting. I think a spread offense out of the singleback with a slot and a tight end as a receiver option will keep some good running lanes for Joe and his running mate to punch through.
But anyway, the purpose of this diary was really to draw attention not so much to the idiocy of one Mr. Joe Theismann, but to instead address to perceived position of our team in the AFC and the reason that the other four teams are positioned below or above us. Do you really think New England's money players will really flesh out the way the Bum Monk sees it? Can San Diego, with all of it's outstanding talent, really contend with a shaky receiver corps and a lame duck coaching staff that was violently installed during a single offseason? Those such discussions, because we really know what the Colts have and what they don't, though it is interesting to see how the mainstream commentators see things through their Silver Blue and Red-tinted view of the world.

coaching staff
the other problem i see in san diego is if schotty couldn't keep some of those guys out of trouble do you really think norv can do it? he might be a good offensive coordinator, but he has yet to prove himself as a head coach.
the last two teams KC and the redskins crashed and burned after marty left... let's wait and see what happens in SD
