Ode to Crushing the Texans

You know let me start this off by saying that I think that Matt Schaub could be a good QB and that while David Carr has talent he clearly had overstayed his welcome in Houston. I mean, last season was as bad as I had ever seen him play. So on that point I agree with the Texans fans and disagree a bit with my friend, BigBlueShoe.

That being said, I am going to have to defend my fellow blogger BigBlueShoe because the things the Texans said about him and our beloved Colts were just numbingly stupid. I felt dumber after reading the Texans fans talking about how they are "on the up" and we Colts are "on the down." Let me just clarrify that having an unproven QB, an aging injury prone RB, and an over-rated WR does not make you "on the up." All that makes you is the 4-12 Texans that you always have been, and until you do otherwise I would suggest you show the Colts some respect. In fact, I think we have won more games in the last two years then you have won in your entire franchise.

And that brings me to my other point that the Colts completely own the Texans and always will as long as Manning commands the field. So in the meantime, talk smack as soon as you win at least 9 games in a season. In fact, if you guys sweep us within the next two years I will eat my keyboard with Tartar sauce!

Mmmmm, tartar sauce.

So I would suggest you stay with all of your "great" Houston memories such as Warren Moon choking in the playoffs at Buffalo, the "glory days" of Webster Slaughter and Haywood Jeffries, memories of all your bad draft picks and finally those "special" memories of David Carr getting destroyed by Mr. Freeney (again and again and again and again).

Oh and its not a "division rivalry" until you can actually "rival" us in some way. Peace! ;)

Rivalry

The AFC South will forever love the Texans for passing on Reggie Bush. The idea of the Texans being our rival makes me frown because I love their ineptitude so much. I think we should really thank them for being so hapless, and pretend to fear Ahman Green's feeble joints. Seriously, Matt Schaub and his dorky haircut make P-Murder look a lil more cool.

This isn't how to bash the Texans....

Instead of this:
155 att, 565 yds, 6 TDs

They got this:
266 att, 1059 yds, 5 TDs

Williams did just fine as a rookie with 4.5 sacks, and more tackles than Freeney (which I don't claim necessarily shows their impact on the field).

The Texans want to beat the Colts, and the only way to do that is to go after Manning (Mario Williams) and not to add some fancy running back that's going to score a few cool touchdowns and average 3.6 yards per carry.

They can be bashed for lots of things, like never squaring away their offensive line, but the things you brought up just don't fit.

Gotta Disagree

I guy with Reggie Bush's talent comes along once a generation. You left out the 80 receptions and 700 yards receiving, and the fact that every time the Saints got in the Red Zone it was Deuce (who had 10 TDs) getting the goal line carries. The guy was a big part (though hardly the only part) of what turned the Saints from a laughing stock to a contender in the NFC. Especially the things that don't show up on the stat sheet like the number of time he was used as a decoy that opened up huge pass plays down the field or runs to deuce up the middle. Bush is a guy worth chucking your current system for and building a whole new one around.

Just running the play action to a guy as dangerous as him, would buy the QB more time than if they added the best 2 offensive lineman in any years draft. Because it would not only buy the QB more time, it would freeze the defense and allow their receivers to get open.

Williams was hardly worthy of a #1 pick and wasn't even considered the best DE on his college team by some scouts. Ya they need a pass rush to stop Peyton, but they also need to figure out how to score some points. Even if he's the next Julius Peppers he's not worthy of a #1 pick when a guy with the talent of Bush is in the draft.

That will go down in history as one of the top 5 draft blunders of all time.

How Reggie Bush turns out. I find it unlikely that anyone has just crazy enough physical skills to blow the NFL away. Steve Smith would be master of all he surveys if this were true. However, he's prone to streaks of average, even though he too is a freak of nature. Everyone in the NFL is just too fast and strong, defenses can plan too much, and there are too many men on the field, for a single player to physically dominate in this league.

Where did I ever say the Colts were "on the down?" Hell, what does "on the down" even mean?

The Texans were not 4-12 last year. They were 6-10. I realize six wins is laughable to a team that hasn't had a losing season in some time. But clearly, a four-win jump is "on the up" (if I'm using the phrase correctly) from 2-14 (2005's record).

No one is saying the Texans are bound for the Super Bowl this season. No one is even saying that the Texans are going to contend for the AFC South crown this season. Despite your apparent assertions to the contrary, the vast majority of Texans fans realize that the team has a long way to go before we earn the right to realistically dream of a championship.

But the undeniable fact is that we're optimistic--we have a new QB that everyone thought was the next big thing before he was traded to Houston in Matt Schaub, a proven free agent acquisition at RB in Ahman Green, a Pro Bowl WR in Andre Johnson, the Defensive ROY in DeMeco Ryans, an exciting rookie in Amobi Okoye, and yes, the guy that everyone loves to bash, Mario Williams. The simple truth is that we have more talent across the board than we've ever had, and it's an exciting time to be a Texans fan.

Best of luck defending a well-deserved championship this season.

Why is this on Stampede Blue? Andre Johnson's not overrated, and while Ahman Green may not be worth the money he'll be making, the Texans defense is up and coming and their entire team should be improved this year. I don't know why we feel the need to get into these war of the words with other teams' fans all the time.

Progress

I think the Texans have made some progress on defense, but on offense they continue to make bad choices. For years now they have needed to address their O-line and have never come close to addressing it. So it really doesn't matter how good Schaub is or isn't if he is constantly under pressure. And I know how they have talked about using a short passing game to make up for their lack of protection, but thats like putting a band-aid on a severed limb.
