Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Tarik retiring?!

Offensive tackle Tarik Glenn will not be back to help the Indianapolis Colts defend their Super Bowl title, according to several people close to the 10-year veteran, choosing instead to retire.

This really sheds light onto the draft this year. I wonder if Tarik gave the Colts a heads up?

Hoping he will have a change of heart!!!

WOW
I gotta say, I saw this coming, but I was sure it would be NEXT season, not this season.  If it's true, well then Tarik, congratulations.  You've had a hell of a career, and you've done an excellent job representing the Colts as well as protecting the blind-side of the eventual greatest football player to ever play the game.

As a Colts fan, I wish you the best of luck, and I'm glad you get to go out on your own terms, with a Super Bowl Ring!

I hope that's wrong
or he changes his mind. He's done an amazing job protecting Manning's blindside for the last 10 years. They have Charlie Johnson and Ugoh but I'm pretty sure Tarik has enough in the tank to outplay either of them next season.

This would make the Ugoh trade/pick make a lot more sense.

Salary Cap
From what I can tell the Colts would at least have a good amount of help for their cap problems if he does retire. He counted just under 7 million last season so would probably cost more this one. If a player retires the rest of his signing bonus goes on the cap that year. He had a 6 year deal with a $10 million bonus. That's 1.67 million on the cap this year.
That 5-7 million of extra cap room would be nice (more than enough to sign the draft picks), but I'd still rather have an elite LT.

hmm
He sure was great, but goddamn was I ever tired of him getting called for false start 5 times a game.

One more season
I really hope that he chooses to come back for one more year as well. Just to show Ugoh the ropes during the season.

PFT
The geniuses over at PFT seem to think that Tarik's retirement talk could be a protest over Freeney's huge contract. I know such things happen in the NFL, and I wouldn't blame Tarik for wanting the security of an extension right now, but I can't remember him being anything other than a class act. He goes about his business and doesn't bitch. If he wants more money, I would expect that he would play out his contract with the defending Super Bowl champs, then cash in next year. All in all, not a bad deal.

Any thoughts?

Glenn

"I've made enough money in my career,"-Tarik Glenn on his contract situation.

"But I don't worry about it. There were times when I didn't get to the Pro Bowl and they gave me Pro Bowl money. Good things will happen if you work hard and not burn bridges." -Glenn

"There's a desperate need for left tackles throughout the league." -Glenn on free agency
