Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

After the Championship Games, it gets really, really boring

It is now "likely" that coach is back in 2008.
NFL football essentially ends after the Championship Games. The Super Bowl, now played a full two weeks after these games, is its own surreal environment more in line with American Idol than American sports. Even last year, I know I spent a good three-four days celebrating beating New England, and then was pretty bored leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. It's too long a wait, but then again what do I know.
  • If you are interested in being a Stampede Blue Writing Fellow, submit your application to me by this Wednesday. For information about the gig, click here. To those of you that have already sent me applications, many thx.
  • The Patriots deserve all the credit in the world for going 18-0. Yes, they are cheaters and now represent everything bad and disgusting in football (especially with the recent "revelation" that Richard Seymour is a Wilfork-like cheap shot artist), but to go 18-0 is a major accomplishment. Though they've had just about every break go their way, 18-0 is nothing to sneeze at.
  • The Chargers had no chance to win yesterday. Tomlinson had no business playing, and Phillip Rivers, hopping around on one leg, was awful. Turner should have started Volek.
  • In the playoffs, you must do three things in order to win: Run the ball; hold your opponent near 20 points, and don't turn the ball over. The Colts did none of those things against the Chargers, and both the Giants and Patriots have excelled at all three this post-season.
  • Two months ago, Eddie V. from Big Blue View had this to say about Eli Manning:
Eli Manning: Amateurish. Awful. Putrid. Terrible. Pick your adjective, anything negative fits what Manning did Sunday. Perhaps the best one is disturbing. How is it possible for a guy in his fourth year, who has started as long as Eli has, and played basically with the same receivers, to look so clueless.

Yesterday, Eddie said this about ole Eli:

Forget all the doubts -- he's a big-time, winning quarterback.
Hehe. Five bucks says that if the Giants lose the Super Bowl, the old "Eli Sucks" mantra will return. I'm not bashing Giants fans, per say. I live in New York part of the year and I can tell you from first hand experience that Giants fans are THE most fair weather fans in football. It's a major reason why the Giants are so good on the road and so bad at home. Regardless of whether the Giants play poorly, ok, decent, or good... they get booed. Giants fans always doubt their players, always wish they had this guy or that guy, and always wish the NFL was more like the MLB (so that the Giants could just buy championships, like the Yankees did).

Eli was always the lightening rod for all this fair weather crap. The team has made the playoffs three of his four years starting. Other than Peyton, no other QB was under the microscope so unfairly. While garbage QBs like Vince Young get a pass, Eli is called a choker, a loser, and an "uninspiring leader" by Giants fans and former Giants teammates.

Now, those said fans and said former teammates (Tiki, you're a schmuck) look pretty stupid.

I don't consider Eddie V. in this category, because I think he's been rather fair with Eli. But I cannot tell you how many times I had to defend Eli from the blind, mindless hate his own fans display on a regular basis. This recent victory will shut them up, but only for about two weeks.

  • One of the biggest reason why Eli is playing better is the absence of Jeremy Shockey. Shockey is the most over-rated player in football, and Kevin Boss, his replacement, is far and away a better TE than Shockey. Unlike Shockey, Boss actually runs the routes designed in the play. Unlike Shockey, Boss can actually block. Unlike Shockey, Boss does no mope, cry, whine, and bitch if he doesn't get the ball. Unlike Shockey, Boss will be a Giant next year while Jeremy looks Oakland bound.
  • And finally, WISH TV is stating that it is now "likely" that Tony Dungy will return as the Head Coach for 2007. Just like Mike Florio's "report" from last week, this is a rumor from an unnamed "source." We will likely get Dungy's answer later today, and like the Zombie boys, I now think Dungy will coach in the Colts in 2008.

Kept trying to take Rivers's knees out if you watched the game closely. The dirt bags are in the Super Bowl.
But we knew that.

And there is a much
Better than even chance that we will win it. No matter what you say, if we win that game,[and we will] we will have made history. A history that I doubt the colts will ever have.

Yes
And you'll still be cheaters. The 2007 Patriots team that went undefeated was also caught cheating twice during that season.

Wonderful legacy, indeed.

This just in -

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has just announced that the trophy awarded to the winner of pro football's Super Bowl shall be renamed & forever known as the "Belichick Trophy". He stated that the coveted award needed an update, a relevance based on today's game. Goodell cited the unsurpassed big-game record of the current coach of the New England Patriots, he was heard to say "the man can flat out coach".

Fans of the all but forgotten Vince Lombardi were asked to comment on the name change but none could found.

In addition
A complimentary video camera and a copy of OJ's unpublished book "How I Did It" are also awarded to the winner of the Belichick Trophy.

And...
A copy of the soon-to-be-released book authored by coach Tony Dungy: "Playoff Challanged - And Proud Of IT" (the definitive manual for those who enjoy underachieving).

Hmmmmm
No real humor in that. Oh wait. I remembered. You're a Pats fan. Explains it.  ;)

Oh, I don't know..
But it's certainly as relevent as BBS's retort that somehow injects a book about a double murderer with the football coaching skills of Bill Belichick.

Figure that one out!

I think
BBS was making a character judgement of the one you guys call the hooded one and everybody outside NE calls the hoodlum.

Jeezzz...
You guys are tough... Belichick wins a few football games and now he's on par with O.J. Yikes...

If the Pats make it 38 in a row next year - I'm sure Belichick's character will be associated with al-Qaeda.

Tiresome
The same old argument: people hate Belichick because he wins. This is what you're implying by associating his record with animosity towards him. I understand why you make this argument; it's all you have. You can't defend Belichick's Spygate cheating, his surly and unprofessional behavior during pressers and post-game handshakes, his forcing Ted Johnson onto the practice field before he had medical clearance, his attempted waiver-wire collusion with the Vikings (which was called out by Minnesota's HC), his affair with a married woman who works in the Giants front office (discovered when her husband reported to the FBI about envelopes full of cash from Belichick being delivered to her), let's see... am I missing anything? Probably, but you get the idea.

The sad part is that I actually believe you occasionally have an interesting point to make. But then you refuse to admit what the rest of the world knows: however good he may be as a coach, Belichick is a pretty lousy human being. So you set up Straw Man arguments (everybody hates Belichick because he's good) and avoid the point. This is exactly what they did over at Pats Pulpit with Rodney Harrison; they claimed he is a good guy who is only hated because he is a good player. Seriously, you seem like a reasonably intelligent person -- don't you realize how pathetic these arguments sound? Why are Pats fans almost pathologically unable to say ANYTHING bad about their team, even when the evidence is right in front of their faces? Denial, denial, denial, and nothing to back it up.

Oh well, I realize Pats fans probably aren't going to change. But think about this: you've said you enjoy the intelligent back and forth on this site over the blind, kool-aid-drinking homerism at Pats Pulpit. But arguments that imply that people hate Belichick simply because he's good add nothing to that back and forth, make you look foolish, and undermine the few rational comments you do make.

Eli
Calling me out on my comments about Eli, eh? LOL!!! Today, I don't think there is much that can ruin my mood.
You are correct about Giants' fans. They are very fickle, and have been down on Eli. The thing is, we're not a patient bunch. What Eli has done the past three weeks is played like the kind of player we were told he would be, instead of the overmatched kid has has sometimes looked like.
It's possible, even likely, that Eli was condemned too soon.
He will never be Peyton, but his 'just keep plugging' personality suits this team.
We would not have said it 6-8 weeks ago, but Giants' fans now have to feel good about their future w/Eli at the helm.

Let me ask you this..
since you're a Giants fan. Do you think Shockey is expendable? Do you get rid of the guy?

Dungy...
Is it just me or did everyone notice that Dungy's head is shaped just like the football he's holding?? He must have football in his blood. LOL

PS: I will be accepting all of your "well wishes", right here on this post, for a job well done by my favorite team, the New England Patriots. Feel free to be a fan of a great football team, one that knows how to win. Go ahead... show your love for a historic team !!

I know... I know... the folks here are still smarting from the Colts loss to the Chargers but, as you witnessed, the Pats took care of that pesky team for ya. Four Super Bowl appearances in seven years... pretty darn impressive!

ALL HAIL THE AFC CHAMPIONS !!! HAIL.. HAIL.. HAIL
