Indianapolis head coach Tony Dungy will return to the helm of the Colts for the 2008 season, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

The Colts have called a press conference for 4:30 p.m. ET today that will include Dungy, owner Jim Irsay, general manager Bill Polian and assistant head coach Jim Caldwell.

Looks like Mike Florio's "source," which he claimed was Jim Caldwell himself and then backed out of, was dead wrong.

a few things

Florio now suggests (in a way that will be easy to back out of) his source was someone who sat in a steam room with Caldwell and was told by Caldwell Dungy was leaving.

Caldwell gets a big raise, a new title (associate head coach>assistant head coach), sits in and has some say on personnel decisions and is committed to (contractually?*) as the next head coach.

* I think Polian or Irsay mentioned that in passing. I also think I remember Florio saying it's against NFL rules to guarantee a head coaching job in an assistants contract, while talking about Garret, the Cowboys assistant.

Job guarantee

That may have to do with what, I believe, is called the "Rooney Rule" in that Garrett is not a minority and it is not permitted to offer a coaching job (at least to a non-minority person) without first interviewing a minority candidate.

Dungy's decision

It's really hilarious listening to the media talking about Dungy's status. Now, after the Colts won the SB last year, he said he was going to sit down with his family and decide whether he was going to coach next year (Sound familiar). He said he went through the same process the year before. So this year, why did this suddenly become such a big story, and more importantly, why was it the main story (it was all that was talked about) the week before we started our SB defense. A lot of people may not realize this but the Colts are the 2nd youngest team in the league. Could that have affected their approach to the game? One player said that Dungy's status was an issue to him because Dungy brought him into the system.

I heard one talking head say that they felt like they had nothing to talk about in football (the playoffs) since the Colts lost. They didn't even cover the San Diego game the week before, all they talked about was Dungy. Now, the media is trying to say that they were misled by Dungy and the Colts because the story got out of hand. Wow!! How did this story get out of hand. Dungy made one statement that he was going to talk it over with his family and let us know on Monday. He did exactly what he said he would do. So, the media took his son's enrollment in Tampa, turned it into Dungy's resignation, and Dungy misled them by doing what he said he was going to do.

Let's hope that when the Colts make the playoffs next year that the media will actually cover the playoffs and the teams we are facing instead of creating a story about Dungy resigning.

So I'm no coach...

... nor do I play one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last year, however.... should we start petitioning now for Coach Dungy to play the starters (or their healthy backups) all year long if we get into the playoffs? Pros:

(1) keep our players "in the game" as much as possible;

(2) give Peyton a chance to take back that TD title with a full 16 games played ;-)

Good news all around ...

Although, let's hold the "rest the starters" debate for next season. With the AFC South ascendant, there are no guarantees we'll be in such a pretty position again next year.

Resting starters

Resting starters had absolutely nothing to do with Indy losing to SD. Nothing. the Colts came out red hot and dominated SD in the first half. Then, in the second half, SD came back. The reason Indy lost is their depth was depleted because of injuries. with Freeney out, Mathis playing at 60%, and Brock hurt, the Colts simply did not have enough players to stop SD when it counted.

Add to that Harrison's injury and the multitude of stupid mistakes, and its clear depth killed our 2007 season, not resting starters. Hell, in Week 17, there were no starters to rest! Everyone was friggin' hurt!

I wouldn't say that

in regards to the Colts "dominating" in the first half. I could see people having problems out there and felt some trepidation from the start.

It was obvious that Marvin was not ready to play in this game, but despite problems with some dropped balls I'd go on record and say this game was lost in the trenches.

Zero pass rush. SD's back-up to Rivers looked like Joe Montana out there.

We also couldn't open up running lanes to save our lives. Peyton was protected pretty well but without being able to establish any semblance of a run game, SD was able to pull their coverage back and make life hell for our receivers. They made us 1-dimensional on both sides of the ball.

Can you tell I'm still angry? Yeah, I'll probably be angry all the way to August or September.

Anyway... keep on keepin' on.

I agree...

We came out on fire. It wasn't a matter of rest. If anything we weren't as healthy as we were led to believe. Pass rush killed us that game, no questions.

As for Florio... he doesn't get to use unnamed sources, then back down and claim the report is still correct because the source "believed" that Dungy was going to retire. That doesn't make the report correct... it makes you an idiot and you got your ass embarrassed because Tony Dungy not only laughed at your report, he proved you wrong.
