Ron Meeks could very well be Washington's next head coach

Daniel Snyder and the train wreck known in league circles as the Washington Redskins are bringing back Ron Meeks for a second interview for their head coaching vacancy. Snyder has spent the last few weeks looking like a complete idiot, firing his defensive coordinator (who he interviewed for the HC job twice four times) and offensive assistant Al Saunders (who he also interviewed). Snyder also went and promoted Greg Blanche to DC and brought in Seattle's QB coach, Jim Zorn, as the new OC. Zorn plans to install a West Coast-style passing attack in Washington.

Snyder did all this without having a head coach hired who could, you know, help pick his own staff!

Already, Redskins fans are up in arms, screaming that Snyder is making disastrous coaching moves that are ruining a once great franchise. What I find funny is Redskins fans continue to support the team even though they all know the owner is idiot taking advantage of their rapid fanbase, which will watch whatever insane garbage if placed on the field. The solution to the Snyder problem is easy Redskins fans: Stop watching Redskins games and giving Daniel Snyder your money! I mean, you all know Snyder sucks. You know (or, at least you should know) that the Skins have absolutely no chance of ever winning a Super Bowl as long as Snyder owns the team.

Stop. Being. Snyder's. Bitch.

Once Snyder figures out he can't dupe Redskins fans anymore, he'll sell the team and go back to creating goofy, crap-ass amusement parks. Then, a smart, intelligent owner will buy the team and bring Redskins fans the quality franchise they want and deserve.

In the meantime, only a candidate like Meeks could walk in and accept a HC job offer like the one Snyder has on the table. Meeks has done a fine job building Indy's defense, but he knows he won't sniff another HC job as long as he's in Tony Dungy's shadow. He also knows he has no shot at Indy's HC job after Dungy retires. Meeks is a good coach who will speak his mind, and maybe that's something the Redskins need.

More importantly, if Meeks gets the job, who will coach the defense for the Colts in 2008?

As someone stuck in Redskin country, I can tell you that calling Dan Snyder a complete idiot is an insult to complete idiots throughout the world.  He's a great businessman, but he doesn't know jack about putting together a football team.

From what I've seen, it doesn't look like Meeks is at the top of the list for Snyder (Jim Fassel!) but I'm confident that there's a plan in effect should Meeks take the job.  Who that is, I have no idea but I'm sure it's someone.

Disregard the title of my comment
It has nothing to do with the comment and frankly, I have no idea why I put it there.

As someone else stuck in Redskins country
it is starting appear that the skins have no idea what they are looking for in a HC other than someone with a "big name".  The fans in the area are starting to get antsy.  I would be very surprised if Meeks is chosen being that his last name is not Cowher, Fassel, etc...

second
as yet another colts fan in redskins country, I can attest to the stupidity of Snyder. I feel for the players, like Portis and Campbell, who play with such heart for such a colossal moron.

Reply to Another
Though it's beginning to look like Meeks was a interview to fulfill the Rooney Rule on the way to Arizona, I feel Meeks has the potential to be a bigger name than either Fassel or Mariucci. Meeks should be the next Redskins coach.  Is that likely to happen? Probably not.

gaojojatd
Honestly, I'd like to see Meeks leave and someone with a more aggressive mindset come in and take over.  Goddamn that would be nice.

YES
God bless the Skins. I really don't like Meeks.

Does the Tampa 2 run in families
Lane Kiffin might be on the way out of Oakland. Dungy built the Tampa-2 with Lane's father Monte.

There may be better candidates out there, just throwing out the first available Tampa-2 (maybe) guy I thought of.

didn't the Bears D coordinator
get the boot after last season and land somewhere as a position coach? Though if a guy had problems working with Lovie, Dungy probably won't want to bring him in.

I don't know the Colts staff real well. Any of the position coaches been there long enough for a promotion.

Lane Kiffin is an Offensive guy
He was the Co-Offensive Coordinator at USC before taking the job with the Raiders.  His counterpart at USC, Steve Sarkisian, was who Davis really wanted for the job, but turned him down, so he settled on Kiffin.

I Dunno
If Redskins fans stopped supporting their team, stopped buying tickets, etc...don't you think Snyder might be tempted to take the team to some other city (a la Bob Irsay)?  It's a thought.

We could have the Louisville Redskins...Oklahoma Redskins...Atlanta Redskins...wait. Doesn't Atlanta already have a NFL team? (whispering) They don't?  ok. Works for me.

Check it to pancakes! Pancakes!

Disagree
If the NFL valued its product, it wouldn't let Snyder move that team.

LOL!!!
thats really funny BBS, like you would stop being a Colts fan if Isarey sold the team to a guy like Synder. Thats just ridiculous.

Yes
Yes, I would.

The fans own the team, not the owners.

Yes, I know Daniel Snyder "owns" a majority of the Washington Redskins, but both the Skins and Snyder are nothing without the support of fans. And if fans rise up and openly challenge an owner by saying We will not buy this product as long as this idiot is running it, the signal is loud and clear.

Understand, if Snyder pulled a Bob Irsay in today's world, he'd be eaten alive. Irsay never had to deal with modern sports media like ESPN, blogs, and the like. He just took heat from Baltimore fans. If Snyder tried to move the Washington Redskins, I firmly believe the league would step in and strongly encourage Snyder to sell.

I have a hard time believing that
when you love a team, that passion just doesn't away because the new owner is an ass. You just have to deal with it. I'm not saying you would necessarily buy tickets or merchandise, but you'd still root for the Colts.

by Terry on Jan 28, 2008 1:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

umm...
To me being a blind fanboy loyal to a team regardless is quite lame. If the team you initially liked becomes a shell of its former self and goes against the reasons you followed them in the first place then why keep supporting them?

I just do not get this fanboy mindset so many have. I have and will never keep following a team that changes their ways that made me like them in the first place. Take the Colts...if a new owner came in and was a douchebag and killed the team and did moves that I did not agree with then I would not keep supporting them. WTF would anyone with any ounce of intelligence keep supporting something they do not agree with?

Blind allegiance is gay....and it is why so many issues have existed throughout history because people will back "their team" or "their country" or "their family" regardless. If people didn't do this crap then I am sure things would change. Snyder knows he can keep pulling this crap because he has the blind hogs there sticking with him year in year out despite how much they bitch about how useless he is as an owner.

you would understand.

I hope you enjoy the competition.
You've compelled me to stop loving my favorite NFL team because I disagree with the owner and wish I had a different one. For now on, Hogs Haven will be an Indy Colts blog committed to following the great Irsay forever, until he fails to meet my standards as an owner, in which case I will root for someone else.

Go Colts!

Fine
Then your team will continue to suck and never win anything, making your support counter-productive to what every fan should expect: A quality product on the field.

Also
I don't say that because I want to demean your loyalty or anything Skins. It is that very loyalty that is being abused and taken advantage of by an incompetent owner who thinks he is above his fans. Loyalty is earned, not given or expected. It is the responsibility of the owner to provide the best product he can place on the field, and if he can't do that than he must bring in people who can. This is where Jim Irsay deviates strongly from his father, Bob. Bob knew nothing about football, but was too stupid and pig-headed to admit it (sound like someone?). Jim knows football, but he also knows that someone like Bill Polian and Tony Dungy know more about football than he ever will. So, he lets them run the show while he signs the checks.

Because the Colts continuously work to put the best product on the field, and have done so for 9 years, they have earned the trust of fans.

Daniel Snyder has done NOTHING for the Redskins. Even the new Stadium stinks in comparison to RFK. Bad drafts. Bad free agents. Bad coaches. Lots of losing. Like any player or coach, if the owner can't get it done, the fans should work to remove that owner.

The team belongs to the fans, because the fans PAY to watch the team. I am a firm believer in that.

Preaching to the choir!
You've already convinced me, BBS. Transforming Hogs Haven into an Indy Colts blog is my first big step towards fixing the problem. As one of your readers pointed out, loyalty to your team is "gay" anyways.

Go Colts!

Spot on in regards to Bob Irsay
Snyder is not all bad, he did give the Professional football world this guy:

(He is always good for a few laughs)

..difference between bad years
I think there has to a differentiation here between a team that is bad because draft picks haven't worked out, or some bad luck etc.  and an owner who is a jackass who has the team for his ego and wants to run the show irrelevant of what happens to the product on the field.    It just amazes me that some people who are so successful outside of football, make such dumb moves with regards to their teams.

Putting aside Snyder for a moment, how about Arthur Blank?

This is a man who is the head of a huge profitable corporation and yet he allowed Micheal Vick, and Bobby Petrino pull the wool over his eyes and screw him...  How does a man so successful in one business screw up so badly in another?

EGO... a football team is a toy and a status symbol.  Smart owners realize you have to have the right people and treat in like a business (Jerry Jones being a classic case... Dallas has gone through some rough stretches but he has for the most part used good business sense to put a product on the field the fans can feel good about)

Dumb owners don't treat it that way despite the money involved.. Snyder is more like a fantasy football owner than a business owner.. and until the fans take their business elsewhere, there is no reason for him to change..   That doesn't mean fans can't still root for their team, but don't give the idiot your money...
