Who's to blame for the Phillies' struggles? Bar-right-arrows

draft board update

Never mind the *final* I had up before. The draft has started but at 3 picks a day it'll be weeks before I make my pick. The time that is allowed to make a pick with also probably give me time to ask all you what you think before it's offical.

So here's the another chance to help me with the draft board.

I've got;

  1. Chris Johnson (non-negotiable)
  2. Trevor Laws
  3. Marcus Howard
  4. Cliff Avril
5/6 Matt Forte/Xavier Adibi (not sure which I like better)

Another pass rusher is probably the Colts biggest need so if the subject of my man-crush is taken before my pick I'll choke back my tears long enough to hopefully fill that need with one of the Laws, Howard, Avril trio.

I like Forte, but he has a big skills overlap with Addai. I'd prefer a #2 RB (Chris Johnson) that brings something else to the table instead of just a less explosive, but maybe better blocking version of Addai.

Adibi would be a monster at LB for the Colts. He fits the system and is more talented and polished than most Colts LB picks. LB isn't a big need, but he's someone I'd be glad to settle for.

Anyone want to shuffle the rankings or add on?

Johnson
I think taking him in the 2nd would be a strictly best player available proposition.  And with our depth issues at DE/pass rush, I don't think we have quite that luxury....unless someone like Howard or Avril could make it to our pick in the third.  I love Johnson, but I say we have to upgrade our DE depth, add a solid LB for depth, and O-line depth much more desperately than yet another RB.  But with our offense, a home-run hitter would be hard to pass on.

Agreed
Johnson is worth taking even if it means not filling the most pressing need--help with the pass rush.  Laws and Howard are good fits, for sure, but I don't see how the Colts could pass on Johnson, especially because backup RB is a need, too.  Laws, Howard or Avril aren't so special that they demand to be taken; in my view, Johnson is.  Plus, it's possible Howard or Avril might still be around in the third round.
The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in the stars, but in ourselves.

Rankings
They look cool to me. If I were doing it (and please do NOT take this as me suggesting anything) I'd place Forte ahead of Avril or Howard. That's JMHO.

I'm making an announcement about the mock draft soon.

Im starting to doubt.
The need for a DT we have Brock, Dawson, Johnson, and Pitcock. That is a starter and a backup for each DT all of them can rush the passer except Johnson but he can push the pocket. So I think needs go like this. A complement for addai and I cant figure out which is a better complement a speed guy like Chris Johnson or a power guy like Matt Forte. I think Chris is a lot like addai but Forte can make a defense  tired so when addai comes back in the running is easier for him in which I expect him to have a breakout year # wise. We also need DE help but some players that could fall to us that no one has talked about on here is guys like Lawerence Jackson southern cal DE. 6-4 271 ran a 4.8 not to fast but had a 1.60 10 yard spilt and that's what matters in defensive ends is how fast you can get off the ball and he had 10 sacks 14 TFL 16 QB pressures #'s don't lie. And the guy from Virginia Tech Chris Ellis DE 6-4 263 ran a 4.7 he had 8.5 TFL 4.5 sacks and 16 QB hurries. The other big need we have is a backup TE I like either Martellus Bennett from Texas A&M he is 6-6 260 a great blocker and runs a 4.7 he had 49 catches for 587 yards and 4 TD's. The other I like is Brad Cottam we have already talked about him on here.

Forte v. Johnson
I've watched highlights of both of them, and I cannot tell who I want more.  Chris Johnson is unbelievably fast, but Matt Forte is strong.  They both have played against good teams.  Forte had 16 carries, 73 yards, and touchdown against LSU.  Johnson had 14 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown against West Virginia.

Flip a coin.

johnson
Would johnson be available at pick 59? what ive seen of him is a deadly weapon that  can take it to the house almost every time he touches the ball. Would other teams notice that and think about dein hester. I mean we saw what miami did last year in taking ted ginn jr because of his return game so its possible that another team earlier than the colts could take Johnson because of the threat that he has, and also i would love it if he was there at 59 because it would give the colts a different dimmension in the return game because i dont think that TJ Rushing is going to do much in the return game.

Here's Mine
  1. Johnson
  2. Laws
  3. Forte
  4. Adibi
  5. Avril
  6. Howard
Howard is only lower because he may be available in the third round, and it would suck to take a player you could have waited on.

Avril over Howard?
I know less about Avril so I'll be looking into it. What do you guys think. I'd seen some of Howard in the second and some of him lasting into the fourth.

I'm goint to take the poll
and it's current results (Avril over Johnson by a vote) as a big yes to him over Howard.

Avril v. Howard
I would rather have Howard over Avril, but Howard out of those six definitely has the lowest stock currently.  I am sure we will get one of those guys unless Polian has a trick up his sleeve.  Last year, I would not have guessed Gonzalez, but before that, it was pretty much common knowledge we were going to draft Addai.  I think that at least one of these guys will be a Colt next year.

addai + Johnson
i heard that when we drafted addai that the colts were looking at maroney but was taken by the pats so went for addai. Im pretty happy with that choice but still would love johnson with our forst pick just because of his return ability. Any thoughts?

by sharpie1600 on Apr 5, 2008 1:23 PM EDT   0 recs

I like forte better
he is more of a complement to addai than johnson is

by coltsfan21hitman on Apr 5, 2008 4:01 PM EDT   0 recs

I don't get that
Forte is a lot more similar to Addai. Addai doesn't go through guys, but the way he runs gets him the same kind runs, lots and lots of 4-8 yard runs with very few long ones, as a power back. Forte is more powerful than Addai but he'll have the same kind of runs. Johnson is a big play threat and he returns kicks and can split out wide.

I like johnson dont get me wrong
but with Forte he will get the 4-8 yard runs but he can wear down teams and then addai can hit some longer runs.

and I like Forte
especially if he drops to the third round. With a DE like Avril, Howard, or Bruce Davis taken in the second.

Bruce davis
Should not be taken in the second round i think he is more 4th round.

I've seen some of him that high
but I prefer and know more about Avril and Howard.

I like lawerence Jackson of USC

NFL.com and New Era Scouting
Don't really paint a good picture of him. Especially in the Colts system. "Not explosive", "streaky play", "inconsistent effort", "possible move to DT", specialty is run stopping," all stuck out reading up on him.

I ment moving him to DT
I think he could be a pass rushing DT

by coltsfan21hitman on Apr 6, 2008 2:01 PM EDT   0 recs

That makes more sense
Besides Laws I haven't looked into many DTs. I'll keep an eye on him.
