I mock your mock with my mock: 4/11/2008

Draft Tek has their new mock draft up, and STILL they have the Colts drafting TE Dustin Keller in the 2nd round, passing up Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Marcus Howard, and Cliff Avril. In the 3rd round they pass up Marcus Howard AGAIN for RB Kevin Smith. It seems like, just like the last scenario, the Colts are going RB and TE in the first two rounds, but the players they are taking are inferior to the players we suggest in our mock draft.

I know it is a simulation, but the data entered into this simulation is flawed. TE is not a major "need." The only real major "need" is a back-up pass rusher. The Colts have very few holes, and I really don't think they are going to pass up Cliff Avril once and Marcus Howard TWICE knowing that their one need is back-up DE.

And, I'm sorry, if Polian passes up BOTH Forte and CJ in round 2, he better have a good damn reason why (ie, he's got insider info that both were caught partying with Matt Leinart recently).

Anyway, here's my revised Mock Draft (4/11/2008):

2 (59): RB Chris Johnson, East Carolina
3 (93): DE Marcus Howard, Georgia
4 (127): CB Jack Williams, Kent State
5 (161): WR Arman Shields, Richmond
6 (196): OC Kory Lichtensteiger, Bowling Green
6 (201): DT Carlton Powell, Virginia Tech
6 (202): TE Joey Haynos, Maryland
6 (205): DE Titus Brown, Mississippi State
7 (236): QB Dennis Dixon, Oregon

Yes, I think Dixon will be there, and yes I think the Colts will take a QB in rounds 6 or 7. If not Dixon, maybe Tulsa QB Paul Smith.

CB?
Jack Williams looks good but I really question that pick. The guy is too small and yes size DOES matter in the CB position. Its not a decisive factor, but its pretty important.

Isn't there a good TE we could grab in round 4 instead? I would even take another DE at that spot over a CB.

Why?
One of the reasons for taking Williams in the 4th round is his special teams ability. He played a lot of ST in college, and is a very good gunner. Also, I am NOT sold on Tim Jennings. Dante Hughes should take his job as nickel corner, but after that it is Jennings, Rushing, and Ratliff. rushing is ok, but Williams is better. A lot better.

Safety position is in good shape with Bob, Bethea, Giordano, and Bullitt. In an emergency, Marlin Jackson is a decent safety, making the need for a good corner (Jack Williams) all the more important.

And no, size is over-rated at CB. We won a Super Bowl in dominating fashion with Jason David as our starting corner, remember?

But...
The two best corners this team has had in a long time are Hayden and Jackson who are both over 6'0 tall.

The cover 2 requires big physical corners who almost act as linebackers. Height is not decisive, but it is important.

defensive backs....
I think we need to look at safety depth before we look at corners, unless we want to find a true cover corner.  Though I'm with you in thinking that size is overrated.

Holy Crap
This draft is amazing.  If this happens, I will go frickin' insane.  I mean, Johnson, Howard, Williams, Shields, Haynos, Litchsomethingorother, and Titus?  That's amazing.

I was surprised at the number of mocks that couldn't even get the draft order right (end of the 2nd round was where I was noticing). It's not that hard to look up and it can make a difference.

I saw Chris Johnson passed on once, for Doucet, here

If that happens we know Marvin is in trouble. They can't put another WR on the field without benching Gonzo or Clark, unless Marvin isn't healthy.
