Updated Mock Draft: 4/16/2008

Yes, yes, yes. We are all still bitter over Guru stealing Chris Johnson from us in the SB Nation Mock Draft. So, what better way to thumb our noses at those petty Broncos fans than to update our own mock draft. After talking last night to Eric "Hank" Hartz at ColtPower, it is certainly very possible the Colts could take Dustin Keller in Round 2 if he is there. The consensus is he is very similar to Dallas Clark, and if the Colts had two big play TEs that would make Bill Belichick's head explode. Eric also think that players like CJ, Forte, and Cliff Avril are definite possibilities. The point here is the Colts will likely get a big playmaker in Round 2, and for the rest of the league that is a scary thought.

2 (59): RB Chris Johnson, East Carolina (Eat it, Guru!)
3 (93): OT John Greco, Toledo
4 (127): WR Arman Shields, Richmond
5 (161): QB Kevin O'Connell, San Diego State (Surprise!)
6 (196): DE Rudolph Hardie, Howard
6 (201): FS Corey Lynch, Appalachia State
6 (202): TE Joey Haynos, Maryland
6 (205): DE Titus Brown, Mississippi State
7 (236): CB Wilrey Fontenot, Arizona

You'll notice Rounds 2-5 are nothing but offensive players, with pick #161 going to a QB. Crazy, I know, but all these picks have a purpose. Eric and I both feel that the pass rushing depth for the Colts can be addressed in later rounds. Guys like Hardie or Brown more than fit the bill. With that in mind, finding playmakers (CJ, Shields) or potential starters in the future (Greco) makes more sense in the earlier rounds. I will have more on O'Connell, who could prove to be a very interesting prospect to develop as a back-up QB. Lynch and Fontenot are more for special teams impact; Lynch especially. I know I said the Colts would not draft a safety, but Lynch is more a special teams difference maker than a safety.

Corey Lynch can be on my team any day of the week
I thought I had heard his name before, and, in fact, I had.  I'll take you back to September 1, 2007, courtesy of the Big Ten Network...

Corey Lynch is a special player
and the perfect example of what years of good drafting net you:  opportunities to ignore "need" and stock the bottom half of your roster with Football Players, i.e. guys who might not be in the first and second rounds with tons of speed or height or size, but who have all the intangibles in place to compete in the NFL.

Guys like Lynch get beat on any given play.  But when their whole career finally gets rolled out, you see a solid team guy who put all of his talents into the service of the team, and who grew as a person and player to meet new challenges.  Guys like Lynch see the Game, not just the Play.

Great tape
for breaking down Corey Lynch.  The begining is a buch of fluff, but valuable for looking at his read and react (some goalline stuff that is pretty impressive).

The second half of the video shows a lot of good looks at his run support, which gives you a great idea of a lot of his fundamental skills.  All around great package, but it looks like he relies on his speed a bit much.  This stuff is only of marginal interest since you guys shouldn't be thiking about him as a safety, but it never hurts to know what your backups can do and are capable of, and just how valuable he is.

Kevin O'Connell

I LOVE the mobility and the arm and the decision making. Where has this guy been.
I will sleep well at night with him as our backup

Kevin O'Connell

This guy is gonna be a steal for any team drafting him on Day 2. I hope we get him. I lived in San Diego as an SDSU alum. This kid is a gamer. His stats do NOT indicate how good of a player he was. His lack of a supporting cast, prevented what could have been a special career by arguably the best QB this school has produced. A lot of his passes were dropped by sub par WRs in his career. It was painful to wathc. This is a guy who accounted for 74% of his team’s total offense as a senior, leading the Aztecs in passing and rushing. The latter stat further proves how inept his offense was considering sacks are deducted from rushing yards and O’Connell spent his career running for his life.

The most impressive thing about Kevin is his mental make up. This guy is something unheard of. A 4 year team captain in college. Peyton wasn’t even captain for four years.

thanks for the vid
styg50. Lynch looks to be perfect fit in the Colts system if they draft him. Great range on pass plays and seems to constantly be around the ball. As BBS said previously, we are deep in our secondary, but but if he falls to us, Im sure the Colts will welcome him with open arms

Very Nice!
If we can get Johnson, 2 defensive ends, Haynos, and Shields, this is a great draft.

Random Question
How long does everyone think the draft will be this year?

Nothing shameless about it
Good mock draft, IMHO.
