A another new Mock Draft (because I screwed up the last one): 4/8/2008

So, in my last Mock Draft I listed the Colts taking Jerod Mayo in the 6th round. Long story short, I pasted in the wrong name. It should have read Wesley Woodyard from Kentucky. My bad. However, what the error allows me to do is create a new Mock Draft.

Every time I look at Draft Tek's latest mock, I shake my head at the notion that both Chris Johnson and Matt Forte will be available, but the Colts pass on them for Purdue TE Dustin Keller? Now, Keller is intriguing, and I plan to do a profile on him, but to draft Keller over Johnson and Forte is utter stupidity.  I'd love Indy to get a good TE in the draft so Indy can return to a little more 2 TE, but give me a break! If Indy had Chris Johnson or Matt Forte, we'd see more 2 back than 2 TEs.

The other element of Draft Tek's recent mock is Georgia DE Marcus Thomas is there in round 3, and the Colts bypass him for RB Kevin Smith for Central Florida.

Um, WHAT?

What's funny is both DE Marcus Howard and Notre Dame TE John Carlson are available in round three of this mock, and it is utter insanity to assume the Colts would pass on both those guys, IMHO. Now, don't get me wrong, I love Draft Tek. But, this recent mock is a bit silly.

This Mock Draft is based on the premise that Marcus Howard is taken in the early third round:

  1. Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina
  2. John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame
  3. Jack Williams, CB, Kent State
  4. Kory Lichtensteiger, OC, Bowling Green
  5. Rudolph Hardie, DE, Howard
  6. Titus Brown, DE, Mississippi State
  7. Kirk Barton, OT, Ohio State
  8. Carlton Powell, DT, Virginia Tech
  9. Jonathan Hefney, FS, Tennessee

Man...
the Colts with Chris Johnson is just scary.

Sigh.  You guys must love Polian to death.  Over at MHR we are looking for DTs to rotate in as starters all the way into the 5th and 6th rounds.  I look at this mock of yours and (besides Johnson) all I see is depth depth and depth.  That must be nice.

Of course, it isn't nearly as exciting!  For us, this draft is critical, and its like our season is already starting.  For you guys, if this draft fails you won't know for several years...

Always a pleasure to have you here.

I personally think the Colts need a solid draft to contend. They have great starters, but you do not win in the NFL without depth, and the Colts need that right now at RB and DE.

Free Safety in the 7th?
Do you really not see the colts drafting a backup QB late? I do not trust sorgi.....i know (knock on wood) manning will be healthy but i feel we need a more reliable back up

correction
"I shake my head at the notion that both Chris Johnson and Matt Forte will be available, but the Colts pass on them for Purdue TE Dustin Keller"

only Forte is available, they have Johnson going to Arizona @ #50. But passing on Forte is still a stretch

Actually
In that mock, it states the Cardinals reached to get him (-7 score). So, based on their value evaluation, he should be there (roughly) at 59.

Well if they have him goin #50
What would it take for us to trade up to get him??? we have a ton of picks we could give some of them up and maby a later round pick next year.

Dennis Dixon
How about taking a flier on dixon in the 7th round to battle sorgi for the backup quarterback spot.

Wouldn't mind taking him
but I think he'll be gone before then.

Backup
If we are this concerned about backup QB then we should have just signed a veteran QB.

I like this mock draft.
We fill some other needs early, then get some solid spots at DE later. And we choose Kory Lichtensteiger still. With those choices, it'd be exciting.

The dumb Draft Tek Sim is because
They changed TE to be a need at the same level as RB and DE the previous top priorities. So the sim now gives the Colts the RB, DE or TE with the best value at #59. Blame Rick McGlothlin of ColtsPower.com, he's the correspondent responsible for setting the Colts position need levels.

Hefney
I don't think you really want him.  Everyone seems to think he's a good tackler but the truth is he gets run over more than he makes the play.  I want to cheer for the guy being a former Vol and all but I just don't want him as a Colt.  However, I hope he proves me wrong...
