According to Larry Kennan, executive director of the NFL coaches association, Mudd, 67, is under the impression a retired coach must wait six months from the time he files his retirement documents to assume a paid consultant's role. That would make it mid-November before he and Moore, 70, could return. It might be possible for them to return earlier as unpaid consultants until they were allowed to be added to the team's payroll.

That’s the million-dollar question, and I’ll be honest: if I had an answer, I’d have written it already. It’s a question I expect will be asked of Colts President Bill Polian and Colts Chief Executive Officer Jim Irsay often in the coming weeks — at least until there is an answer. There’s been something in me since the beginning of the process saying I just couldn’t believe this pension issue would force the duo away.
