With their most pressing need (OT) addressed in the first round, the Bills turn toward the defense. Being one of the many teams that are converting to a 3-4 scheme, the Bills need a lot of help on that side of the ball. Priority #1 in a 3-4 is getting a huge nose tackle to hold down the interior. With Mt. Cody already gone and the next NT (Cam Thomas) projected as a 3rd round talent, the Bills turn to the next priority in a 3-4, outside linebacker. At South Carolina, Norwood played both defensive end and OLB with great success, setting school records for TFL (54.5) and QB sacks (29) and drawing comparisons to James Harrison. That kind of production and versatility makes him an ideal OLB for a team desperately needing one, and the Bills sure do need one.
How will he impact the 2010 Bills?
It's hard to predict the impact of Norwood in the 2010 season. While some say that he is very much ready for the NFL and point to his production at DE/OLB as proof, there are those who say that he's going to need some adjusting time for an NFL system. With speed being listed as one of his primary strengths, I anticipate the Bills using him as mostly a rush linebacker (like an extra DE) and on special teams for his first year while he still learns the system and adjusts. Barring injury or being a complete bust, I would anticipate a modest rookie season for Norwood with a huge sophomore jump.
