A.J. Green - WR, Georgia
Pick made by beerbrunch:
It was another miserable year for Bungal Nation, as the Cincinnati Bengals finished 4-12 (they only have 2 winning seasons in the last 20 years!). The offseason has seen their Head Coach get a contract extension (inexplicable for any franchise other than the Bengals), their starting QB threaten to retire if he isn't traded and their clown of a WR challenge the Head Coach to a steel cage match. Bengals owner, Mike Brown, has refused to trade Carson Palmer. Instead, it actually looks like the Bengals are trying to make Carson happy. The 2-headed, headache monster of Terrell Owens and Chad Johnson are as good as gone (Palmer played much better without TO and Ocho in the final 2 weeks of the season). The Bengals fired Offensive Coordinator, Bob Bratkowski, and brought in Jay Gruden. Gruden brings the quarterback friendly, West Coast offense with him. Come draft time, the Bengals will take A.J. Green, the most talented wide receiver coming out of college since Calvin Johnson. Green will make Carson a happy QB. A very happy QB.
Some will question Green's character (Green was suspended for the first 4 games of the 2010 regular season after he admitted to selling his 2009 Independence Bowl jersey to an agent). Mike Brown will not be one of those people. Brown salivates over character issues. Green's physical attributes and overall talent have the majority of NFL scouts salivating. At 6'4" and 212lbs., he has great size for an NFL WR. He also has the break away speed to separate from even the fastest corners. He has long arms and outstanding hands, which enable him to catch anything thrown his way. Don't believe me when I say 'anything'? Go to YouTube and type in 'AJ Green Highlights'. You'll be amazed at how he extends and contorts his body to make seemingly impossible catches. Green is a Prime-Time Player. In a nationally televised game this past season, against the #1 team in the country, Green destroyed the highly touted, Auburn secondary scoring on two long touchdowns in the 1st quarter.
Green will make an immediate impact in the Bengals offense. Both he and Palmer will have very good seasons. Expect them both to flourish in Gruden's west coast offense with Palmer approaching 4,000 yards passing and Green going over 900 yards receiving with 70+ receptions and 8 TDs.
Now, there is a chance the Bengals will lose CB Jonathan Joseph to free agency. If they do, don't be surprised if they take a look at Patrick Peterson (LSU) or Prince Amukamara (Nebraska), but even then, how could they pass on an absolute game changing WR in AJ Green? Oh yeah, because they're still the Bungals, and Mike Brown's still calling the shots. Who Dey! indeed.
If Green is taken #4 overall, he'd be the first WR taken by the Bengals in the first round since they took Peter Warrick 4th overall in 2000. He would also be the second Georgia player to be taken in the top 4 in the last 3 years, as Matthew Stafford was taken #1 overall in 2009 by the Lions.
