Earlier today, the Colts officially announced the hiring of running backs coach David Walker and Devin Fitzsimmons as coaching assistant.
BBS already did an excellent write-up of David Walker, so lets look at Devin Fitzsimmons.
His hire, is a continuing trend by Coach Cadwell and the Colts to pull from the college ranks. David Walker joined the Colts taking over the same position he held at Maryland, while Devin Fitzsimmons was a former tight ends coach at the University of Richmond.
The hire is somewhat surprising given Fitzsimmons relative lack of coaching experience, especially at a big-time collegiate program. Previously, Fitzsimmons spent a year as a graduate assistant at the University of Virginia and before that he served as a graduate assistant for the offense as well as a director of operations at Kansas State.
Certainly not wanting to knock his work, but graduate assistant and director of operations seem more management type positions than coaching ones. Last year however, he did coach the tight ends and he has some previous experience working with wide receivers as the position coach there at Bucknell (again another small liberal arts school).
Nevertheless, Fitzsimmons brings several accolades including the Bucknell Football Moxie Award for special contributions to the program that he won back in 2004 during his playing days.
Let's hope he brings a fresh voice and youthful vigor to the team. As coaching assistant, maybe he will shoulder the burden and be in charge of calling timeouts for Cadwell.
Either way, let us welcome Devin Fitzsimmons and Devin Walker (again) to the team. We wish them, and the Colts, the best of luck.
