Jimmy Smith - CB, Colorado
Pick made by Bradman721:
Well here's the way we see it. We would have loved to make a splash and match Calvin Johnson up with another talented WR but the only 2 guys that would warrant this high of a choice are off the board. I then look to the offensive line, but my top rated OT is Solder who I feel would be more of a project than the 12th pick calls for as I would want him to step in immediately. He's supremely gifted physically but makes too many mistakes for the Lions to feel comfortable with him stepping in right away and protecting Matt Stafford's blind side and bum shoulder. We then move to the defense. The Lions would have loved Von Miller to add to their already vicious pass rush starting from the middle and working its way out. But he's off the board. The next best thing at OLB would be Akeem Ayers but 12 is a bit too high for him as he has trouble in coverage and can get lost in stretches. We then move to the defensive backfield which definitely needs attention. There isn't a standout safety in this draft so we look to CB. Paterson and Amukamara are both gone but luckily tape is late on little known Colorado CB Jimmy Smith and he's still available. Smith has great size for a CB at 6'2 and 203 lbs and he doesn't lose speed or mobility because of it. Smith is a natural athlete and very fluid corner who can fit in both zone or man coverage schemes which the Lions cycle throughout games. He has the size to match up with larger receivers and the speed to match faster receivers. He rarely gets lost and when he does he makes up for it with good closing ability. With a solid and sometimes dominant front 4 on the DLine the Lions need a reliable defensive backfield and Jimmy Smith is the perfect addition. His skill set will be the perfect match for the Lions and might be the only player that keeps them from trading out of the 12th pick.
That being said....It would not surprise me one bit if the Lions were to trade up and get AJ Green and set the tone for this year's draft.
If Smith is taken 13th overall, it'll be the first time since 1998 the Lions have taken a DB in the first round (Terry Fair). Also, it'll be the first Colorado DB taken in the first round since 1993, when Deon Figures was taken 23rd overall by the Steelers..
