Akeem Ayers - DE, UCLA
Pick made by ColtsFanFromHawaii:
Man do I hate San Diego. If I was to really do this draft for them, I'd probably take Charlie Sheen and hope he implodes their organization. However, that might backfire because he is constantly #winning and has #tigersblood.
The Chargers are constantly being touted as "the most talented team in the NFL" despite never doing anything in the playoffs (a friend of mine who is a Charger fan would argue that they do one thing exceptionally well, beat our beloved Colts).
If you look a little deeper, you can actually see quite a few holes that they need to fill (OLB, WR, DE, ILB, OT, S). Cameron Jordan would've been a great pick but was gone at 14 to the Rams. One thing that has been missing from this team is a truely elite pass-rushing OLB. Ever since "Lights-Out" Shawne Merriman became "Steroid User-Reality Star Abuser-Former Charger" Shawne Merriman, the Chargers have tried to fill the void left by his ridiculous-looking mohawk. They drafted Larry English (WHO!?) with a first round pick in 2009. That has worked out about as well as Donald Brown has for the Colts.
With Akeem Ayers they get an explosive athlete with a prototypical body for a 3-4 OLB who can get to the QB in passing situations. Having watched him a few times on TV he is definitely one of those players who jumps out on every play.
Having said that I'm still hoping that they go with Sheen.
If Ayers is taken 18th overall, it'll be the second time in three years the Patriots have taken an DE in the first round (Larry English). Also, it'll be the first time since 1979 a DE from UCLA was taken in the first round, when Manu Tuiasosopo was taken 18th overall by the Seahawks.
