2011 NFL Week 1 Pre-Game Open Thread

New, comments

Even though this season looks to be much different than each of the past 10 or so, it's still exciting to have the NFL back for another season, even without #18 under center for the Colts. Maybe it's Fantasy Football or picking games, but it should be a pretty good day of football.

Today will also be filled with memorials at each NFL Stadium for the 10th Anniversary of 9-11. Every fan will receive an American flag as they enter the stadium, there will be a moment of silence before each game, and Taps will be played before games in New York and Washington. I was just starting my sophomore year at Notre Dame, and was awoken by my roommate just before the plane hit the second tower. It was the first time since JFK's assassination that ND canceled classes for a non-weather event. A mass was held on South Quad, where they estimated that 8,500 of the 10,000 students attended.

The most surreal moment was during mass, Air Force One, flanked by two F-16s flew right over campus on their way to Nebraska, where then President Bush was going into lockdown. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family and friends who lost loved ones back on that fateful day. I was fortunate to not know anyone closely affected, but I'm sure some of you do.

There will be another thread closer to game-time for the Texans game. Use this to talk about other games, fantasy football questions, picks, or your 9-11 memories. Oh, and don't forget to enter the Picks contests.
