Report: Colts Fire Frank Reich And Pete Metzelaars, Vikings Will Hire Alvin Williams As Their New Defensive Coordinator

We saw this Tweet from Pete Metzelaars' son earlier today, indicating his dad had been let go by the Colts. Now, Phil Wilson of the Indianapolis Star is reporting that Metzelaars has indeed been fired. Joining him is wide receivers coach Frank Reich.

We also have a report from Brad Biggs of National Football Post (via Yahoo! Sports) that the Vikings will hire Alvin Williams as their new defensive coordinator. Williams has been the defensive backs coach for the Colts since 2002. He worked with current Vikings coach Leslie Frazier in Indianapolis in 2005 and 2006, when Frazier worked for the Colts as a special assistant.

Earlier this week I heard chatter that linebackers coach Mike Murphy will retire. No word yet on the status of legendary defensive line coach John Teerlinck or defensive assistant Rod Perry.

Regarding Metzelaars and Reich, both were considered 'Polian coaches' due to their association with former Colts president Bill Polian from their days in Buffalo. After Colts owner Jim Irsay fired Bill Polian and head coach Jim Caldwell following the 2011 season, it seems it became moot to keep Reich and Metzelaars.

This apparent housecleaning of the coaching staff now includes the head coach, the offensive line coach, WR coach, defensive backs coach, and likely the linebackers coach-interim defensive coordinator. If you are the Colts offensive coordinator, QB coach, and the assistant o-line coach, it might be wise to update your resume in the near future.
