TY Hilton Ties Colts Rookie Record For A Receiver

Lost in the craptastic Colts loss to the Patriots on Sunday was the fact that wide receiver TY Hilton tied a Colts rookie record.

Hilton caught six passes for 100 yards and two scores on Sunday in Indy's 59-24 loss, which was his third game with 100 yards receiving. Those three games with at least 100 yards tied a club rookie record.

In a year where rookies are tying or breaking some rather significant club records - most notably Andrew Luck shattering many of Peyton Manning's rookie stats- it is fitting that one of Luck's favorite targets in Hilton is also getting in the making history.

As you all might recall, back when the Colts traded up to get TY Hilton in the third round in April, I wrote this:

The third round has been a bad one for G.M. Ryan Grigson. He took TE Dwayne Allen at No. 64 after already selecting Coby Fleener at No. 34. Then, Grigson swung a trade with the 49ers, handing over Indy's 97th pick and a 5th rounder to move up to 92 and take Hilton, a player he probably didn't need to move up to get. Hilton is fast (4.34 40-yard time), explosive, and has kick return ability. He also has fumble problems and is only 5'10. He projects as a slot receiver, which is what Austin Collie is. Like the Allen pick, this one is a head-scratcher. So many needs on a truly terrible defense, and Grigson takes four offensive players in a row. Yes, wide receiver was a need, but no where near as vital as corner, nose tackle, or safety.

Today, Collie is done for the season, and possibly for his career. Hilton has proven to be more explosive than Collie, and just as productive. So, yeah, I was wrong in my snap analysis of the draft. Not the first time. Not the last.

I will, however, point to the "fumble problems" note in my post-draft report above and highlight how that seems interesting based on how Hilton has played as a returner. He had trouble holding onto the ball Sunday against the Patriots. Still, overall, he's been great this year.

And, as always, whenever I say I don't like a player and see that player goes out there and prove me wrong... yeah, it makes me happy. Hilton has 30 receptions for 455 yards and four touchdowns. The last rookie to have a season like this? Austin Collie in 2009, when he caught 60 balls for 676 yards and seven scores.

Congrats to TY. Keep it up, kid.

Oh, and note to self: Do NOT sit Hilton in fantasy again. Ever! I put the dude on my bench in favor of Torrey Smith. Dumb, dumb, dumb, diddy, dumb, dumb.
