2012 NFL Regular Season Opener Will Feature Giants V. Cowboys

New, comments

Though not specifically Colts-related, this news does provide us with the first scheduling announcement for the 2012 NFL regular season.

The NFL announced today. that the Super Bowl champion New York Giants will host the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium (The Meadowlands, NJ) in the 2012 season-opening NFL Kickoff game on Wednesday, September 5. The game is on NBC at 8:30 PM ET.

The reason the opening kickoff game for the season is on Wednesday and not Thursday this year has to do with the schedule of the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Yeah, in case you forgot, this is an election year.

This was an interesting choice for the NFL. I'd have thought New York v. Pittsburgh would have been a more compelling draw since the Cowboys are now, essentially, an afterthought in the NFC East.

Think about it. The Eagles were very good in November and December last year, which should translate into improved play in 2012, while the Redskins are likely to draft Robert Griffin III. Both are more interesting than Dallas right now.

The Giants hosting the kickoff game continues a tradition that started in 2004, in which the previous year’s Super Bowl winner hosts the NFL Kickoff game to open the following season.
