Colts Promote WR Griff Whalen To Active Roster

It's looking as if Indianapolis will not make a trade after all.

Dreams of another Colts in-season might have been just that.

After spending nearly an entire week with just 52 active players, which led to speculation that Indianapolis was looking into trading for a veteran wide receiver to replace the injured Reggie Wayne, the Colts have promoted practice squad receiver Griff Whalen to the active roster.

Whalen, just like his fellow Stanford alums Andrew Luck and Coby Fleener, knows offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton’s system well, and is suited to run routes from the slot.

The Colts also signed center Thomas Austin to the practice squad.

While the move to bring Whalen onto the active roster wasn’t a surprise, it does send a signal that Indianapolis is not interested in trading for another player. The NFL's trading deadline is Tuesday, October 29th at 4:00 p.m. EST.

Indianapolis' current wide receiving corps consists of Whalen, Darrius Heyward-Bey, T.Y. Hilton, LaVon Brazill, and David Reed.
