Here are some facts as we get closer to the NFL trading deadline. Not rumors. Not suggestions. Not speculation. Not anything other than what is known at this present time.
The Colts currently have only $1,300,000 in salary cap space.
Potential trade target Hakeem Nicks currently counts $3,705,000 against the New York Giants cap. His base salary for 2013 is $2,725,000 and he’s got a $500,000 bonus.
Fan-suggested trade target Larry Fitzgerald is in year three of an 8-year, $126 million contract. His cap hit against the Cardinals this season is $10,250,000. That hit will escalate to $18 million next year and $21,250,000 in 2015!
Potential trade target Josh Gordon counts $1,139,355 against the cap for the Cleveland Browns in 2013. He is in year two of a 4-year, $2,324,000 deal.
Any trade made by Indy before the NFL trade deadline must fit under the Colts’ salary cap. This is the NFL, not the NBA. This league works under a hard cap that cannot be exceeded. No exceptions.
The Colts are going to want to keep roughly $1 million in open cap space after any potential trade. Injuries and roster signings are going to happen over the next 8 weeks of regular season play, and having cap space is critical to filling key spots week-to-week.
As of this writing, the Colts are sitting at 52 active players on their 53-man roster.
The NFL's trade deadline is Tuesday, October 29th at 4:00 p.m. EST.
