Report: LaVon Brazill Suspended For Positive Marijuana Test

Debates over marijuana are silly. Over-the-counter drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol are all far more harmful and addictive. Yet, they are all perfectly legal to use and abuse. Many other developed countries have either legalized or decriminalized marijuana, but not the USA. Some states have, but overall it is illegal to possess or use the substance. It's just backward and foolish to continue to keep this substance illegal.

That's my opinion. The law is a different story.

The law says, in most states, that possession of marijuana is a crime. Thus, the NFL bans its use and regularly tests its players from April to August. If a players gets a positive test, there's what amounts to a warning. If you get another positive test, it's a four game suspension. If you get a third, it's an entire year.

Three strikes. Boom. Boom. Boom.

Knowing this, it makes Colts wide receiver LaVon Brazill's stupidity all the more unforgivable. Brazill was suspended recently for the first four games of the 2013 regular season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. In league circles, it's widely known that if a player gets a four-game penalty, he likely got it because of a second positive pot test.

In Brazill's case, that seems to be what happened, as Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star recently detailed. Both Brazill and Colts safety Joe Lefeged became offseason distractions recently. In Lefeged's case, he was arrested for carrying a firearm in Washington DC and for fleeing the scene. The gun charge seems silly, but Lefeged fleeing the scene is on par with Brazill's stupidly testing positive for smoking pot:

Admittedly, what Lefeged did was far more dangerous than what Brazill did, which, sources tell me, was testing positive for smoking marijuana. Lefeged’s indiscretion involved drinking, drugs and guns. Brazill was only guilty of doing what millions of Americans do on a semi-regular basis.

I am in favor of legalizing marijuana, but I wonder, how can you win with guys who not only fail one drug test, but manage to fail two of them? How do you win with guys who don’t care enough about themselves, their profession and their teammates to stay off weed for an extended period of time?

I'd heard similar whispers about Brazill's pot-smoking, but I didn't think much of it until now. What players do in the privacy of their homes is their business... as long as it's legal. In Brazill's case, the legality of smoking weed isn't what concerns me. It's the perception that this guy is just too stupid to understand that maybe, just maybe, he should have laid off the blunt for five months. This especially after already getting busted with a first, positive test.

Dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Brazill's days in Indianapolis are numbered.
