Projecting the 53-man Roster as Training Camp Ends

We project the final 53-man roster as training camp comes to a close, with our own Josh Wilson, who watched training camp first hand.

Thomas J. Russo-USA TODAY Sports

Training camp is over, and so once again we look at who might make the 53-man roster. Here is my take on it after watching most of training camp first hand. [For comparison, here's my pre-camp projection.]

Keep in mind that this list will change a lot, because the thing that really matters most is preseason games, not training camp. Training camp gives you an opportunity to play in the preseason games, and preseason games give you an opportunity to make the team. Games are ultimately what is most important, and the fact of the matter is that we've only had one so far. So this will change a lot, but this is where I see the roster at after training camp (and one preseason game).

Quarterback: Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck

Running Back: Vick Ballard, Ahmad Bradshaw, Donald Brown, Kerwynn Williams

Fullback: Stanley Havili

Wide Receiver: Reggie Wayne, Darrius Heyward-Bey, T.Y. Hilton, LaVon Brazill, Griff Whalen, OUTSIDE PLAYER*

Tight End: Dwayne Allen, Coby Fleener, Justice Cunningham

Offensive Tackle: Anthony Castonzo, Gosder Cherilus, Emmet Cleary

Offensive Guard: Donald Thomas, Mike McGlynn, Hugh Thornton, Jeff Linkenbach

Offensive Center: Samson Satele, Khaled Holmes**

Defensive End/Tackle: Cory Redding, Ricky Jean Francois, Fili Moala, Montori Hughes, Drake Nevis

Nose Tackle: Aubrayo Franklin, Josh Chapman

Outside Linebacker: Erik Walden, Robert Mathis, Bjoern Werner, Lawrence Sidbury

Inside Linebacker: Jerrell Freeman, Pat Angerer, Kavell Conner, Kelvin Sheppard, Josh McNary***

Cornerback: Vontae Davis, Greg Toler, Darius Butler, Cassius Vaughn, Allen Chapman

Safety: Antoine Bethea, LaRon Landry, Joe Lefeged, Delano Howell

Kicker: Adam Vinatieri

Punter: Pat McAfee

Long Snapper: Matt Overton

* I think the Colts will bring in someone not on the team right now at wide receiver because of LaVon Brazill's suspension. If not for that, I think the team would only keep 5, but because of Brazill's suspension, I wouldn't be surprised to see another receiver brought in for the first few weeks of the season at least.

** Depends on his health. If he still isn't ready to go by week one, the team may be forced to keep a 3rd center around (Rick Schmeig?) until Holmes is healthy.

*** I was really impressed by Josh McNary in camp, but if he doesn't get on the field soon (he is currently injured), he won't make this roster. He needs to actually show his skill in a game and not just on the practice field.

Additional Note(s):

  • I really thought about putting Dominique Jones on this list as a fourth tight end, but in the end there just wasn't enough room for him on the roster. Don't be surprised if he ends up making it, though. He's had an impressive camp.
  • I also wouldnt be surprised if defensive lineman Lawrence Guy makes the 53-man roster. He seemed to get quite a few opportunities in camp.
  • Chandler Harnish won't be on the 53-man roster. Count on it.
