When the "final" 53-man roster for the Colts was announced yesterday, I made a point to tell everyone that it was far from final, because the team would continue to sign people that other teams waived. The Colts did just that today.
The Colts claimed tight end Jack Doyle off of waivers from the Tennessee Titans, and to make room for Doyle they made the very surprising move to waive rookie running back Kerwynn Williams. That move was very surprising to me and many others.
Doyle (6-6, 258 pounds) is from Indianapolis originally and attended Cathedral High School before going to Western Kentucky University for college. He was signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent this past May. He is a good blocking tight end. Per Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, it seems like a good move for the Colts.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Not surprised someone came after Doyle. Was really impressed with him. He's from Indy so a good landing spot. <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Titans&src=hash">#Titans</a> liked him</p>— Jim Wyatt (@jwyattsports) <a href="https://twitter.com/jwyattsports/statuses/374237445417472001">September 1, 2013</a></blockquote>

It does raise the question, however, of Justice Cunningham's role, as Doyle seems to be brought in for just the thing they were expecting Cunningham to do. For now, he stays, but we'll see if that lasts. I'd guess it does, unless they really need room for someone else. But Cunningham isn't really safe, by any means.
The release of Kerwynn Williams to make room for Doyle, however, is surprising and puzzling at the same time. It leaves the Colts with just three running backs and four backs total if you add in the fullbacks. I wouldn't be surprised if another running back joined the team as well. If Kerwynn Williams clears waivers, I fully expect him to wind up on the Colts practice squad. IF he clears waivers.
Additionally, the Colts announced the signings of six players to the practice squad:
- OLB Daniel Adongo
- C Thomas Austin
- QB Chandler Harnish
- TE Dominique Jones
- LB Josh McNary
- CB Sheldon Price
