AFC Week Twelve Playoff Picture: Colts vs. Chiefs Projected in Wild Card Round

New, comments

We take a weekly look at the AFC playoff picture.

Thomas J. Russo-USA TODAY Sports

There wasn't much change in the seeding in the AFC playoff race in week twelve, though we now have a different team in the driver's seat for the sixth seed.  While the Steelers were in the spot last week, this week it's occupied by the Chargers.  What is interesting about the current scenario is that it would be the exact same wild card weekend as last year in the AFC.

Last year in the wild card round the Colts hosted the Chiefs and the Bengals hosted the Chargers.  Through twelve weeks of the NFL season, the Colts are currently projected to host the Chiefs and the Bengals are currently projected to host the Chargers in the wild card round of the playoffs.  Of course, it seems like every week there is shuffling with the wild card teams so there is still plenty left to play out - including the AFC North, which is entirely up for grabs.

Also, let's note that the Colts aren't totally out of the running for a first round bye, though it does seem unlikely at this point.  But if Denver were to lose a couple of games and the Colts were to continue winning, it could happen.  It seems likely that the Colts will be playing on wild card weekend, however, and it's currently looking like they'll be hosting the Chiefs in a rematch of last year's wild card classic.  Despite a loss to the Raiders last week, however, this is a better Chiefs team than the one that traveled to Indy last year and they would certainly give the Colts a huge test at home.

Believe it or not, there's only five more weeks of the NFL regular season, and the playoff picture is starting to take shape - though there's still plenty left to be determined as well.
