Colts owner Jim Irsay was arrested three weeks ago for driving intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance. Per a report from the Indianapolis Star's Tim Evans and Tom Alesia, the arrest occurred two weeks after a friend of Irsay's died of an apparent drug overdose in a townhouse which was given to her by the Colts owner.
The report is detailed and tells of a long association between Irsay and the deceased, per several financial documents obtained by the Star. It also raises the question that Irsay, through a trust administered by Colts executives, purchased the townhome with money from his ownership of the Colts and then gave it to the friend. Please read the report if you want all the assorted details.
That Irsay may have used money derived from his ownership of the Colts to pay for a private residence for another person is not illegal. However, as PFT's Mike Florio notes:
Because he’s the sole owner of the team, the decision to divert funds for personal use won’t be a problem — unless, of course, charges incurred for personal endeavors were reflected as business expenses.
What's important to note here is that nothing in this report implicates Irsay in the woman's tragic death, nor does it state that Irsay is involved in any new illegal activities outside of what he was arrested for back on March 17th. What it does do is paint a picture of self-destruction for both Irsay and for the woman named in the report.
Irsay checked voluntarily himself into a "healthcare facility" after he posted bail on March 18th. His eldest daughter, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, is currently running the day-to-day operations of the team.
