The Fourth of July is later this week, and that's a good time to reflect and thank those who have served and are serving in our armed forces. Of course, it's always a good time to do that, but it's ever so timely now as Independence Day approaches.
Colts punter Pat McAfee and tight end Coby Fleener expressed their gratitude towards someone who has served our country recently by renovating and improving his home. Erich Orrick, who has received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, volunteers with the organization Wish for Our Heroes, though McAfee, Fleener, and others, including those with hhgregg (who played a big part in this as well), decided it was time that he receive something, as he's always looking to help others. McAfee and Fleener sent Orrick and his two daughters to Chicago for a weekend, a group of people including McAfee and Fleener went into Orrick's home and began renovating it. They redid rooms such as the living room, Orrick's man-cave, and the rooms and playroom of his daughters.
You can watch a video of the process and the reactions here, and I highly recommend you check it out. Those serving in our armed forces deserve our thanks and our support, as they truly are "heroes" - a word thrown around too often in sports.
McAfee has been tremendous at supporting our troops in the past as well. He was nominated for the NFL's and USAA's Salute to Service Award last year for players honoring our troops, and then at halftime of a Colts home game last year McAfee helped with the homecoming of a soldier, who was reunited with his family. He has been a tremendous influence in the community, and it's great to see Coby Fleener getting involved as well. Both players truly get what matters and they strive to make a difference, which is great.
Let's take some time to honor and thank those who serve our country this weekend especially with the Fourth of July. If you'd like to donate to Wish for Our Heroes, or for more information, visit their website.
