Earlier today we brought you the report that the Colts have released inside linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, and now we've got a report of another player cut: safety Dewey McDonald.

I would consider him a P squad candidate. Has upside</p>— Stephen Holder (@HolderStephen) <a href="https://twitter.com/HolderStephen/statuses/505770759898554368">August 30, 2014</a></blockquote>

The reported release of Dewey McDonald is no surprise. He was a very interesting undrafted prospect at safety on a team that needed safety help, but he didn't do much in training camp or preseason to earn a spot. His talent and potential is undeniable and he's got upside, and for that reason I think he's an ideal practice squad candidate if he clears waivers. McDonald is a guy similar to Qua Cox, who the Colts released a week ago - an intriguing undrafted prospect who really impressed the Colts in offseason work but, when it came to camp and preseason, didn't seem to get many chances nor take advantage of those chances they were given.
Still, look for McDonald to land on the Colts practice squad tomorrow if he clears waivers, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out that when Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano met with him they told him the same. The Colts likely won't give up on McDonald, but they made the right decision in releasing him. It means that Mike Adams, LaRon Landry, Colt Anderson, and Sergio Brown will make the team at safety, and then we'll see what Delano Howell's status is.
Again, reports say that Dewey McDonald has been cut. We'll continue to update you as the day goes on.
